About the Author
ROBERT L. NAVIN founded Real Time Risk Systems LLC in July 2004. Prior to this, he helped set up a hedge fund in 2002 that grew to more than $1 billion in assets under management during its first year. Navin was previously at Highbridge Capital Management as head of quantitative analysis from 1997 to 2002. He graduated with an MS and a PhD in theoretical particle physics from the California Institute of Technology in 1993.

This book is very well-written and intuitive; just the right approach to the bread and butter of finance from a practitioner's point of view. I would call it the short-step guide to getting the academic physicist, or mathematician prepared for the trading desk.

Didn't See That Coming!!!

I'm going to admit I did not like the beginning of this book. I almost gave up and stopped reading at 40% but a lot of people I trusted gave this book high ratings so I kept at it. I even questioned how this could possibly be a thriller.. At around 46% the rug is completely pulled out from under you and the ride to the end is wonderful. This is one of the best plot twists I've ever read as it made me want to reread the beginning (which I didn't like) to see how I missed out on what was going on!

I'm not going to say much about the actual story itself because there is just about no way to do it without spoilers and you absolutely want to go in blind. I guessed part of what was happening in the beginning stages, but there is no way I could have came up with the whole picture on my own. So don't be afraid by other people's negative reviews with it being "predictable." They are just full of themselves IMHO.

The characters themselves are all fully fledged out and complex. The police have some back stories that are going on at the time of the main story line that are not fully resolved but I didn't truly care about them anyway. They are just there to keep the pacing of the story and not really necessary to the plot, but didn't necessarily detract from the story either.

Overall great story. I'd read more from this author but I'm not sure she can out do this one.

Suspenseful with surprises, too

I hadn't intended to write a review of "I Let You Go" tonight but here goes. I liked it, I really, really liked it. The book is slow, sort of plodding in the beginning. Stick with it. The stodginess serves to make the horrible more horrible when you are gobsmacked by the plot and the characters. The characters are fully drawn and are believable in their good and evil. Never a false note on that score. They speak and act as real people.
The many twists and turns will keep you tied to the book. There were times when I might have been rude to my fellow travelers because I was so absorbed. It's a good read, not a perfect read, but it kept me glued to the page and I was sorry when it ended. I could have kept on going--I liked it that much.

The entire premise of this book hinges on an event that so utterly unbelievable it's impossible for me to understand the good reviews. I kept reading after seeing some of the reviews say things pick up in the 2nd half, even though the first half is like watching paint dry. It does indeed pick up in the second half, however when you get all the way to the end and the 'mystery' is solved, you are left shaking your head that you spent hours of your life reading it.

SPOILER ALERT - Do not keep reading if you are planning to read this book.

The idea that this abusive mentally ill man just happens to be driving in a drunk rage with his wife in the car and HAPPENS to spot his illegitimate son who he's never met (product of a one night stand) crossing the street and decides to run over him and kill him is insane. Seriously, the entire plot of this book hinges on this hit and run absurdity. And then, the abused wife decides she need to take the blame for it because she's worried the guy will kill her? You don't find this out until the last few pages, leaving you shaking your head that you read the whole thing.

As any Leonard Cohen fan knows, “So Long, Marianne” is one of his best songs, and it is about a real person. Cohen met Marianne Ihlen (then Marianne Jensen) in 1960 on the Greek island of Hydra, where her husband had abandoned her and her infant son for another woman. “The coming together of Marianne and Leonard was like a slow waltz,” writes Hesthamar. Ultimately, Cohen invited both mother and son to live with him back in Montreal. She accepted and became one of his literary muses. But this is also Marianne’s story, from her youth in Oslo, her marriage, her life on Hydra and with Cohen in Montreal. Later, she visited the restless Cohen when he was living at the Chelsea Hotel in New York, only to be told by him that his bohemian world was no place for a young mother. About the Author
Award-winning journalist Kari Hesthamar wrote this book based on lengthy conversations with Marianne Ihlen and supplemented by interviews with Leonard Cohen. Helle V. Goldman spent her childhood on the Greek island of Hydra and in Providence, Rhode Island. She resides with her husband and daughter on yet another island, this time in Norway—above the Arctic Circle—where she is the chief editor of an international scientific journal. In her free time she is working on a film documentary about Hydra with the Skofteland Film production company.

Interesting but poor writing..

I'm not sure if this has been translated into English and that is the reason why it is so poorly written.

As a die-hard Leonard Cohen fan I will consume anything connected to him which is why I gave it the rating of three stars. If it hadnt been for the connection with Leonard, it would have struggled to garner a single star. Easily the worst written book I have ever read!

Well-translated, gentle love story between soulful folk bursting with sensuality, creativity, love of life. Fate brought their paths together under beguiling Greek skies. Time stood still. Sadly, their roads eventually forked.

This is a favorite book of mine that I read in Norwegian when ...

This is a favorite book of mine that I read in Norwegian when it came out some years ago. I am an admirer of Kari Hesthamar from her home country, Norway. She is a talented writer and radio documentary producer who creates deeply moving stories. Her radio documentary about Marianne Ihlen, who was Leonard Cohen's partner for several years in the 1960s, is tender and respectful. Everyone I spoke to loves the interview, which was made in Norwegian and is available online at NRK. The book "So Long, Marianne" is very well written, in the same no-frills and thoughtful style as the radio documentary. It is excellent news that it's been translated into English and published in Leonard Cohen's home country Canada. May it be translated into many more languages, so that more people can enjoy the beautiful story of these young, talented artists on the Greek island of Hydra.

Excellent referenc for both professionals and individuals

I work at Colorado State University but not at the vet teaching hospital. I know this is the book that they use in a required calss for all vet students. I also help moderate some forums at an online Dachshund bulletin board among the forums I help moderate is the giref forum. If you are an animal lover and have an even mmoderate interest in psychology I think you would this book well worth yur time. IF you are a professional working with companion animals and their humans then I would also highly recommend this book to you. A therapist working with grief in general may find this a handy reference to better understand the bond people can develop with their companion animals.

Recommended reading for anyone in the animal care industry

I was desparately looking for a book on grieving the loss of a pet when I lost both of my cats to illness. I was prepared for one loss, but not the other, which took me by surprise. I came across this work by Lagnoni, Butler and Hetts, and found that it not only helped me see what was going on in my own emotional situation, but it also taught me what I should be looking for in a veterinary clinic. Working as a volunteer at an animal shelter, I also see the effects of euthanasia on the workers there, and perhaps this book would be helpful to some in those situations. It is clearly written, stocked with good examples and true life experiences, and sets up a protocol for vet practices to be better able to deal with their clients, both people and animals, in life changing situations. It accepts that animals are a large part of many peoples lives, as important as people. In doing so, the authors recognize that compassion, empathy, and understanding are necessary to help clients cope with their pet loss, and grief. It also recognizes that staff working in the animal health care field are also in need of guidance on how to cope with these difficult situations. The book is well organized, and makes a good reference text for specific situations, as well as provides general overview on how to achieve a compassionate and caring clinic.
