Fever by Charlotte Lamb is one of Lamb's better books. The story begins when the heroine, Sara Nichols ,is attending a party with her step brother. The hero, Nick Rawdon, asks someone to introduce the two. As they are being introduced, the heroine is attempting to keep an eye on her step brother who has a tendency to become drunk and tell their clients what he really thinks of them at these types of shindigs. Sara and her stepbrother are both artists while Nick, is a businessman. Nick is the sort of person who Sara and her stepbrother detest because of his wealth. Anyway, as they were being introduced Sara kinda didn't give Nick much of her attention. Of course this made him want to meet her all the more. Somehow Nick thinks that Sara's step brother is her lover. Since she doesn't want to be bothered with any man, Sara allows Nick to believe the tall tale.
Moving on, Nick decides that he wants her for himself and really goes about trying to make her his. Sara does everything she can think of to put distance between the two. When a job comes up in the country side, she takes it. After a long separation between the two, Nick finds Sara at a party with one of his employees. Now Nick is really feigning for Sara because he snatches her out of the party and into his car. At this point he thinks she and her stepbrother aka fake lover are some type of swingers. Of course they manage to work it out at the end. It took the Nick and Sara about two years to finally get together because Sara was determined to avoid Nick at all costs. Even in the end she was sort of pulled along by some other people to give into Nick. I really enjoyed this book and it almost pulled a crocodile tear or two from my eyes. I love when the hero has to wallow in self pity & jealously because of his love

Hypocritical and arrogant reading!

I like some of Charlotte Lamb's books, but unfortuntaly, like many of her books of the 70s and 80s, this one also features a hero that is cruel and sadistic to a women is really not so sympathetic herself. Sara is an artist who has an infatuation with her guardian of many years. Nick is a banker who sees her and wants her. But he gets the mistaken impression she's a swinger and although he desires her, has contempt for her. I was forced to sit through endless tirades of Nick blasting Sara's supposed personality which wasn't even true, and I was always thinking that he's such a hypocrite because it didn't stop him from taking what he could from women like the woman he thought Sara was! Even at the end, when he finally found out Sara's true nature and she called him on his hypocritical behavior, he didn't seem enough repentant to me. Here he's admitting there were other women after he met her, and he had been grousing about thinking she had other men. It was ridiculous. I can't really recommend this book, unless it sounds appealing to you.

Great book

I disagree entirely with the previous review. The basic plot is correct. Nick thinks that Sarah is has a love relationship with her step brother. He doesn't respect her but is desperately attracted to her. I found him an attractive and appealing hero. He was not one-dimensional, but was in conflict about his feelings for her.
The book is well-written. There is a side plot with the step brother which is also very emotional.

John Romas is a professor and counselor for the Department of Health Science at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Dr. Romas teaches stress and health courses, implements stress-reduction interventions, and conducts workshops and seminars on managing change and promoting health for public schools, state agencies, healthcare organizations, and businesses. Dr. Romas has written numerous books and articles about stress management and health promotion. He is an associate fellow of the Albert Ellis institute.

I have been an avid reader of books in the area of stress management and have read the first edition of this wonderful workbook. Recently, I reviewed the second edition and find it to be simply terrific. It has many practical techniques that will serve lot of people around the world. Good job and keep it up!

New for used price ,LOVE AMAZON!

I bought this book on Amazon.My son needed it for college.We figured with it being used it was still worth the money since books for college are very expensive.We paid under ten dollars and to my surprise the book is new.We checked other websites and they wanted over fifty dollars.Thanks to Amazon and the seller we saved lots of money.My advice is check Amazon first save money and time.

"Uncommon courage was a common virtue": this was said of Marines on another island, Iwo Jima. Texas journalist Sloan's excellent research, interviewing and journalistic prose will have readers of this moving book saying it of Wake Island, too: this popular military history is the best account yet of the Battle for Wake Island in December 1941. An almost barren coral atoll in the Central Pacific, Wake was a link in American communications with the Far East and squarely in the middle of Japanese-held islands. So both sides targeted it in the coming war, and soon after Pearl Harbor the Japanese began steady air attacks on the atoll's garrison. That garrison included a minuscule Marine air arm, flying half-wrecked F4F Wildcats, a thin battalion of Marine infantry and artillery, and a large number of civilian construction workers overtaken by the war while building a base. Battered from the air, this motley group actually drove off the first Japanese attempt at a landing, and inflicted heavy casualties on a second and much stronger effort before surrendering. The Wake Islanders can truly be called "heroic," even if Marine Major Devereaux and Navy Commander Cunningham did not coordinate as well as they could have. The Japanese emerge with little credit for either their witless tactics or their harsh treatment of the prisoners, although a Dr. Ozeki saved the lives of several wounded Americans. Wake Island has nearly faded from memory; the survivors interviewed are fading from life; this book is direly needed on any WW II shelf.

This is the third recently published account about the capture of Wake Island in December 1941 (after Pacific Alamo by John Wukovits [2003] and Hell Wouldn't Stop by Chet Cunningham [2002]), and like its predecessors, the book avails itself of the handful of witnesses to the combat there. Sloan distinguishes himself with a seasoned journalistic approach, emphasizing the personal experience of young marines and civilian construction workers who defeated an initial Japanese attempt to land but succumbed to a second one. The possibility that Wake could have held out has generated conflicting memoirs and naval accounts, which Sloan draws on in his narrative as he recounts the fighting from the perspective of the foxhole. Collectively lauded as heroes at a grim time, when the war was going Japan's way, the marines are ably individualized by Sloan in ground-pounding dramatization of the gory action at every gun position. Wake Islands Heroic Stand

First, I was only nine years old when the attack on Pear Harbor and subsequent battle for Wake Island took place. I remember our father coming to the bed room and telling my older brother and myself that we were at war with Japan. At that time I hadn't even heard the name Pearl Harbor. Thought it was in San Francisco Bay. When naming the battleships which are named for states it kinda of added to the confusion. My folks, like everyone else in North America at the time were glued to the radio and the battle for Wake Island was very much in the news. Several months later a movie came out on the battle of Wake Island which I saw and left everyone with the impression their were no survivors. As an adult I read many articles on the Battle of Wake.Bill Sloan's book is probably the most detailed and informative which also cleared up a lot of misinformation documented by other writers.

Why don't we know more about this heroic struggle?

Bill Sloan accomplishes for me everything he set out to do--which is to give the reader a close-up, on-the-ground view of what it must have been like to endure the siege and the aftermath of this little-known struggle that represented the first face-to-face combat between the Japanese soldier and the American Marine. The endurance of these men is an everlasting tribute to both the Marine Corps and to the American spirit. And similar to what one finds when reading "Ghost Soldiers" or "Flag of our Fathers", one sees here the corruption of the bushido code by the Japanese military and the horrific consequences of this corruption--to both the Japanese foot soldier and later to US POW's. Credit to author Sloan for presenting a moving and enduring tribute to the brave men on both sides. And some welcome contrast to the conventional wisdom by restoring the reputation of that benighted scapegoat, Admiral Kimmel. How about a few more belated medals to these men who were every bit as courageous and effective in the performance of their duty as Alvin York and Audie Murphy.

Mr Sloan gives a good account of a sadly unknown battle to many generations. The defenders of Wake set the tone for the rest of the Pacific campaign. The Imperial Empire found out that maybe they did not have the divine right to expansion and that the Americans were not the spoiled, lazy children of priveledge that they expected. While a great triumph for the men who fought there, Wake is, in my opinion a blemish on the US forces for essentially hanging them out to dry. Despite Kimmel's errors at Pearl Harbor, I do have to give him credit for at least trying to help out these abandoned men before his successor, in his infinite lack of "determinism", managed to FUBAR the whole mission and leave these US Soldiers and civilians out to dry. Disgraceful!

Speaking has been a tremendously beneficial activity for my business. I find it fun, but it's nice when you leave with business as well.

Karl goes through every step of the process for you to strategically plan and executive your speaking "career".

I have a book around 300-pages and this book just under 100. I have to say: this is the one that strikes me as something you can pick up and take action on without getting lost in the weeds. You have all the information you need and none of the extra fluff.

If you own an agency, or a similarly operated business, I'd recommend you give this a read and figure out who in your team will be the speaker!

About the Author
Dagoberto Gilb spent sixteen years working as a construction worker, twelve as a highrise carpenter with the United Brotherhood of Carpenters. He is the author of The Magic of Blood (University of New Mexico Press), which won the 1994 PEN/Hemingway Award and was a PEN/Faulkner finalist, The Last Known Residence of Mickey Acua, Woodcuts of Women, and Gritos, which was a finalist for the National Books Critics Circle Award. He has been the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Whiting Writers' Award. His work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Threepenny Review, Harper's, and The Best American Essays. His latest novel, The Flowers, is due out at the end of the year. Born in Los Angeles, he made his home for many years in El Paso and now lives in Austin, Texas.

Difficulty Digesting History?

When I was in college getting my degree in Spanish, my professor opted to use this book as our textbook for our Spanish History class, and I loved it. Finally, history read like a story or a tale, not a lot of facts and info that had to be digested like bad tasting vegetables. Everything made sense. Everything was clear. And, the literature had a natural flow, like a riveting novel. But, I wouldn't expect anything less from Carlos Fuentes. I wish that he could have written all my classes' textbooks, in that way I would have graduated with a 4.0 average!

The devotionals are as timely today as they were when Thomas Kempis wrote them. I have encouraged my Latin students to read them, since the English translation follows the Latin for each devotional. Even someone who does not read Latin can read the English translation and be uplifted by them.

This book was recommended to me as an example of fresh writing. I wholeheartedly agree! This book is a wonderful read. This is not your usual happy-ever-after story. I could not put the book down!!! I can't wait to get to her other books of Sweet on You and Nothing Sweeter, all in the series of "A Sweet on a Cowboy".

darned good book!!

I finished this book yesterday and it's still sticking with me. Some really good books do that. I'm not one to cry over a book, when I feel something strongly it still stays inside. Charla Rae and Jimmie have lost their son, a son that it took them 10 years to finally conceive. A lot of guilt and grief have driven them apart and he leaves. They are separated, not divorced when 40 year old Jimmie hooks up with 20 year old Jess, and then lies about it to Charla, further destroying their marriage.

When the book opens they are now divorced and both miserable. The story of how they rebuild the trust and love that they have had since high school makes for one fine book. It also tells about bull raising in Texas, something I didn't think I would be interested in at all, but found quite fascinating. I would recommend this book to a friend, in fact, I have.

Extraordinary!

Wow! This book wasn't exactly what I had been expecting but it turned out to be so much more. The author tackled some tricky subjects for a romance but she pulled it off to create an honest, riveting, stick in your gut story. I cried, I laughed and I was transported to a ranch in Texas. Have a few tissues handy because she knows how to tug the heartstrings but believe me, the journey these characters take you one is worth it. Looking forward to more from this author.
