A never-before-seen popular culture history of postwar Japan, it is sure to fascinate fans and anyone interested in manga, anime, and the potential of the graphic storytelling medium.

Toshio Ban joined Tezuka Productions in 1974 as one of Tezuka's assistants. After working for a period as a free-lancer, he later re-joined Tezuka Productions in 1978 as the sub-chief of manga production for magazines, supporting Tezuka's creative work until the end.

From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up—This is the first English translation of an enormous homage to one of Japan's most famous manga and anime creators. After Osamu Tezuka's death in 1989, this graphic format biography was released in Japan, first in serialized form and later collected into several volumes. The English version is more than 900 pages long and is taller and wider than traditional manga, so reading it will take a large commitment of time and energy. That being said, it is absolutely worth the read. This volume gives an amazingly extensive view of Tezuka's life, from his childhood through his adult years. It covers the breadth of his career, including the creation of memorable characters such as Astro Boy and the innovations he used in manga storytelling and in the development of anime. While this title is positive in its treatment of Tezuka, it's no puff piece. It focuses on how incredibly prolific he was, and it also examines how overextending himself affected his personal and professional life. Over and over again, Tezuka is shown trapped in different rooms, working as quickly as possible while his editors wait outside, refusing to leave until he hands them their pages. Readers will come away with an appreciation for Tezuka's influences and will be inspired to seek out his creations. VERDICT For fans of manga and anime, as well as anyone interested in innovative people and the creative process.—Andrea Lipinski, New York Public Library

You'll learn a lot and you'll want more of Tezuka's manga
By R. P. Glass
THE OSAMU TEZUKA STORY is a wondrous, red brick of a book. It is a life-spanning yet intimate biography [in long-form manga] of the man who would become post-WWII Japan’s manga no kami-sama, “God of Manga”, in order to finance his experimental and commercial anime which went on to win film festival prizes globally for more than a decade.

Originally collected and published in 1992, three years after Tezuka’s death, writer/artist Toshio Ban builds his 866 page epic in stages:
Part 1: Osamu to Osamushi (1928 – 1945);
Part 2: Dreams of Manga (1945 - 1959); and
Part 3: Dreams of Anime (1960 – 1989).

The reason the byline on the cover reads “Toshio Ban and Tezuka Productions” is the degree of unlimited access Ban had to Tezuka’s family, friends, editors, assistants, and staff. As his narrating avatar, Toshio Ban speaks through one of earliest characters Tezuka ever created: Shunsaku “Mustachio” Ban.

Using Osamu Tezuka’s own words and the words of those who had known him, we can see what skills and strengths Tezuka absorbed within the environment of his loving family which allowed him to survive and be shaped by his cultural environment. As viewed through samples of his life-long artwork, we can see Tezuka form his manga dreams into rising manga reality from the ashes of 1945’s Post-war, Occupied Japan.

It was the cinematic pacing of Tezuka’s manga which allowed me to “read” volumes of HIN NO TORI even without knowing Japanese when I discovered his manga in the mid 1960’s. It wasn’t until 2008 that I could read PHOENIX in English. Throughout those years and beyond, I sought as much of Osamu Tezuka’s work as I could find. One of the main reactions I had while reading THE OSAMU TEZUKA STORY was wishing that more of his work existed in easily obtainable English editions.

[The same yearning for more struck me while reading about his work in animation. Thirteen of Tezuka experimental films can be found on THE ASTONISHING WORK OF TEZUKA OSAMU DVD still available on Amazon. The only one of his feature-length commercial films I could find as a DVD on Amazon is HIN NO TORI 2772 as ANIME STARS: SPACE FIREBIRD 2772.]

Despite its length, THE OSUMA TEZUKA STORY is a compulsive page turner. Frederik L. Schodt’s translation moves smoothly through Toshio Ban’s art which channels the best of Tezuka’s techniques. Following the biography are appendices into which I have yet to delve in fear of desiring too much not yet available in English.

I have room on my bookshelves for more of Tezuka’s translated manga [maybe PAPER FORTRESS and THE CRATER]. If you too young to have soaked up KIMBA or ASTRO BOY from TV you might find how much of Tezuka’s work was inspired by American popular culture fascinating.

THE OSAMU TEZUKA STORY is an inspiring study in curiosity, hope, perseverance, and skill. I recommend it to any long time or new enthusiast for Tezuka’s art and his message of that all life is connected.

At this point, if Kory M Shrum writes something, I'm gonna read it!
By Tiffany, Avid Book Devourer
Full Disclosure: I received an early copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

I don't even know how to start my review because a lot of what I want to talk about would spoil the book! Maybe I should just stick to the fact that DYING FOR A LIVING was a brilliant book and this is a fantastic follow up? :D

DYING BY THE HOUR picks up after the events in DYING FOR A LIVING. Jesse chose Lane for her relationship, causing Ally, her BFF and sometimes lover, to close out and back off. But Lane is harboring resentment because Jesse chose Ally in that basement. Sure, Lane has NRD now, but Jesse didn't know that at the time and it burns at him. So while she has to deal with nefarious plans from her father, a boss who is pretending to be dead, and the joys and woes of being a Replacement Agent, Jesse has lost her BFF and gained a BF who is prickly with hurt feelings.

The writing is just as good as the first book: it's well told, well built, and flows nicely. I normally don't like narratives that switch points of view because it can get confusing, but Kory M Shrum does it right and it flows naturally.

Shrum also knows how to make those characters believable. I was highly annoyed with Lane, wanting to punch him at one point, annoyed with Jesse, sympathizing with Ally, and wondering what the heck is all of this coming to. I think good writers are the ones that evoke emotion, even if it's simple loathing for a character and Kory Shrum is one of those writers. You end up caring for her characters and wondering what is going to happen to them around the corner.

If you loved DYING FOR A LIVING, this follow up comes out September 2nd. Not too much longer!

Jesse Sullivan is back in 'Dying by the Hour' and that's a very good thing
By Mike Billington
Jesse Sullivan gets paid to die.
So far, she's done that more than 80 times.
But there are people out in the world who would like to make her next death permanent.
In "Dying for a Living" author Kory Shrum introduced us to Jesse who, because of a quirk in her genetic makeup, can - literally - come back from the dead. She's one of a handful of people - roughly 2 percent of the population - that can do this and for several years she was a federal death replacement agent. In effect, she got paid to die so that others might live.
Then something went wrong. Around the country other men and women like her were being murdered in such a way that they were not able to return to the living.
Thousands of them, in fact.
And Jesse, trapped by religious fanatics and a high-class escort whose daughter had been kidnapped, was next on the list.
She escaped but she knows that she is not safe.
Might never be safe, in fact, unless the killers are caught.
In "Dying by the Hour" Shrum continues Jesse's story and it is every bit as good as the first installment in the diminutive heroine's saga.
In fact, it may even be better.
In "Dying for a Living" Jesse is in love with two people: Lane, a hunky guy with a streak of bad boy in him, and Ally, her childhood girlfriend who now works as her assistant. She's going to have to choose one over the other at some point and in "Dying by the Hour" she has made that choice. This gives Shrum an opportunity to delve deeply into the emotional lives of both Jesse and Ally and she does it with a deft touch. What could have been a sappy romance is, in Shrum's hands, a story of the sacrifices you make for those you love and the price you pay for making those sacrifices.
"Dying by the Hour" is not just a story about lovers and sacrifice, however.
Far from it: This is a crackling good adventure story complete with gunfights, kidnappings, hand-to-hand combat and enough psychotic characters to fill the average asylum. If you like action, you'll certainly find it in "Dying by the Hour."
Shrum is an excellent storyteller with a firm command of the language and a strong narrative sense. Her characters are finely drawn and her plotting is seamless. She sets a scene without a lot of superfluous description and, as a result, puts the reader in the moment without slowing down the narrative with useless details.
And, just as she did in her first novel, Shrum ends this book leaving her readers wondering what happens next.
Personally, I can't wait to find out.

Dying for the Next One
By Elizabeth Poole
Some of the other reviewers have posted a fabulous plot synopsis, so I'm going to focus on the elements that made me fall in love with this series all over again.

I read a ton of urban fantasy, and keeping a series interesting and engaging, while fresh and new, is nearly impossible. Shrum pulls it off, though, and I'm dying for the third book in this series. She splits the book between Jesse and Ally's POV while remaining in first person, and clearly marks who's chapter it is, but there was never a doubt as to who was speaking. Each character's voice is distinctly different, not just in tone and phrasing, but their worldview and who they are. I really enjoyed the peek into Ally's head and I hope Shrum continues this trend. Shrum makes the best use of having multiple views by showing us the girls keeping secrets from each other, and giving them their own inner demons to fight.

I was also impressed with Shrum's ability to cut right to the quick as well. She doesn't shy away from the hard to handle subjects about how far is too far, and the moral consequences of your actions, but the book never felt preachy. The difficult situations the characters faced felt more real because of how the characters struggled and handled them. It really made them come alive.

I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series. Shrum has expanded her original concept in DYING FOR A LIVING in this next installment, but there's so much more for us to explore.

*I received an ARC in exchange for a fair review.

Perceptual Organization in Vision: Behavioral and Neural Perspectives (Carnegie Mellon Symposia on Cognition Series)From Brand: Psycholo

Understanding visual perceptual organization remains a challenge for vision science. Perceptual Organization in Vision: Behavioral and Neural Perspectives explores ideas emanating from behavioral, developmental, neuropsychological, neurophysiological, and computational approaches to the problem of perceptual organization. The growing body of research on perceptual organization has converged on a number of critical issues, most of which are addressed in this volume. These include issues concerning the nature and order of organizational processes, the stimulus factors that engage the mechanisms of organization, the developmental stage at which the mechanisms of organization are available, the role of past experience and learning in organization, the neural mechanisms underlying perceptual organization, and the relations between perceptual organization and other cognitive processes, in particular, object recognition and visual attention. Divided into four parts, the book is designed not only to detail the current state of the art in the field but also to promote an interdisciplinary approach to the study of perceptual organization. Part I presents an overview of the problem of perceptual organization, different frameworks for understanding perceptual organization, and a state-of-the-art summary of the domain. Part II details which organizational processes are hardwired in the perceptual system, which are acquired through experience, and how object perception relates to other aspects of cognition. Part III describes various attempts to understand the neural mechanisms underlying perceptual organization using two different approaches--neurophysiological and neuropsychological. Part IV offers a computational approach to the problem. This book is intended for cognitive psychologists, neuroscientists, computational vision scientists, and developmental psychologists.

Harrison Birtwistle's Operas and Music Theatre (Music since 1900), by David Beard

David Beard presents the first definitive survey of Harrison Birtwistle's music for the opera house and theatre, from his smaller-scale works, such as Down by the Greenwood Side and Bow Down, to the full-length operas, such as Punch and Judy, The Mask of Orpheus and Gawain. Blending source study with both music analysis and cultural criticism, the book focuses on the sometimes tense but always revealing relationship between abstract musical processes and the practical demands of narrative drama, while touching on theories of parody, narrative, pastoral, film, the body and community. Each stage work is considered in terms of its own specific musico-dramatic themes, revealing how compositional scheme and dramatic conception are intertwined from the earliest stages of a project's genesis. The study draws on a substantial body of previously undocumented primary sources and goes beyond previous studies of the composer's output to include works unveiled from 2000 onwards.

Review
"Even were Harrison Birtwistle's Operas and Music Theatre not so well written by such a perceptive and well-qualified author as David Beard, it would be a definitive study. Since it is, the book can be unreservedly recommended for anyone interested in this corner of contemporary music: they cannot but come away with a greatly enhanced understanding of how Birtwistle's music works. For enthusiasts of Birtwistle's original and beautiful musical world it's essential."
Mark Sealey, Classical Net (classical.net)

"David Beard's new study of all Birtwistle's dramatic works is as impressively comprehensive and thorough as anyone could hope ... There is a wealth of new insight and information in every chapter ... this is a wonderfully dedicated study, which provides an invaluable guide to the most significant operatic achievement of our time."
Andrew Clements, Opera

"... composers have a thousand ways of conjuring notes, and it is a testimony to Beard's skill and diligence that he has managed to explain so many of them ... When Beard explicates the music he writes with admirable clarity, and no future writer on the composer can ignore the insights he offers ... one hopes that Beard's colleagues at Cardiff University have cracked open a few expensive bottles in celebration of his achievement, even as they reflect that his exhaustive efforts have deprived other scholars of a profitable research area for a few generations to come."
Kevin O'Connell, The Musical Times

"... the nature of Beard's focus enables him consistently to provide fresh, alternative insights that complement and enhance the existing literature ... [He] provides the reader with valuable, fascinating insights into Birtwistle's compositional workshop ... [and] draws on an impressive range of technical and conceptual tools alongside a keen eye for musical details that open up new interpretative vistas. This is a serious, committed volume that makes a significant contribution to Birtwistle scholarship, and should be essential reading for anyone interested in stage music of the late twentieth century."
Edward Venn, Tempo

Invaluable overview of Birtwistle's musical dramas
By Autonomeus
David Beard has written the first comprehensive survey of Harrison Birtwistle's music for opera and theater. Birtwistle is still writing prolifically at 78 (he turns 79 on July 15, 2013), but Beard includes all his musical dramas through "The Corridor" (2009). Only four of these works have been recorded, and only one on DVD.

I found his analysis of "Punch and Judy" (1967), "The Second Mrs Kong" (1994), and "The Last Supper" (2000) to be the most revealing, interesting, and rewarding, but others may certainly find other sections of this 469-page book to be equally valuable depending on their interests.

Here is the list of works covered by chapter:

1) early works
"Down By the Greenwood Side" (1968-9) libretto by Michael Nyman
2) "Punch and Judy" (1967) libretto by Stephen Pruslin
3) "The Mask of Orpheus" (1984) libretto by Peter Zinovieff
4) "Yan Tan Tethera" (1986) libretto by Tony Harrison
5) "Gawain" (1990) libretto by David Harsent
6) "The Second Mrs Kong" (1994) libretto by Russell Hoban
7) "Bow Down" (1977) libretto by Tony Harrison
"The Io Passion" (2004) libretto by Birtwistle and workshop
"The Corridor" (2009) libretto by David Harsent
8) "The Last Supper" (2000) libretto by Robin Blaser
"The Minotaur" (2008) libretto by David Harsent

Birtwistle, Peter Maxwell Davies, and Stephen Pruslin formed a musical group in 1967 called the Pierrot Players, after the famous piece by Schoenberg. The group didn't last for long, but Beard argues that it is a clue to a major influence on "Punch and Judy." Pulcinella, which was Anglicized to Punchinello, and hence Punch, was a stock character in commedia dell'arte, along with Pierrot, and thus there is a significant overlap between "Pierrot Lunaire" and Punch of "Punch and Judy." Pruslin's libretto draws on the 1828 source text, the first script for the popular Punch and Judy plays, written by John Collier.

I do not typically gain much insight from musicological close readings of scores, but Beard reveals that the piece uses a symmetrical but disguised chromatic wedge throughout, which culminates and becomes audible during the "Black Wedding Procession" in Punch's nightmare. The work is obviously an example of the grotesque, and I found Beard's analysis of "the subversive Punch" in working-class satirical performances to be a crucial point. A high point of the music is Judy's da capo passion aria, which Beard argues is a parody of opera. The character Choregos can be seen to symbolize opera, and hence the murder of Choregos by Punch can be seen as an expression of Attali's view that "music is a simulacrum of ritual murder" (72). Attali also said that "noise is murder," and that opera represents the domestication of music.

On this interpretation, Pruslin and Birtwistle are, in their opera of grotesque brutality, rebelling against the domestication of music. This is all very interesting and revealing, but Beard does not shed any light on the central mystery of Birtwistle's "Punch and Judy" -- why Polly accepts the serial killer Punch in the end.

Despite eighty pages of analysis, Beard does not reveal anything of interest about the epic "The Mask of Orpheus" beyond what I already knew, that it is Birtwistle's longest and most complex opera, and was many years in the making. The chapter on "Yan Tan Tethera: A Mechanical Pastoral" includes a fascinating piece of background on Birtwistle. After a youth spent wandering the wild woods and fields of his father's farm at Accrington, near Manchester, a gigantic power station was built nearby. Birtwistle describes the massive chimneys as "God's boots," dwarfing the house and violating the landscape.

Beard systematically discusses the development of the music and the libretto for each work. In the case of "Gawain," the poet David Harsent drew on the 14th century narrative poem. He transforms the Green Knight, who takes on the dual nature of both Green Man, representing the wild, untamed outdoors, and the moral values of the society -- its paternal and civic authority. Harsent transforms Morgan le Fay from a marginal and evil character in the original to one both central and virtuous. The opera has strong links to Wagner, and is informed specifically by both "Gotterdammerung" and "Parsifal."

Beard conveys the core of the drama -- Gawain's realization that he is not the Hero of the story -- as an exemplification of the conflict between the Individual and Universal Interests, a key post-Enlightenment dilemma. I have not read the entire libretto, but it is far from clear to me that I would have extracted that insight.

"The Second Mrs Kong" has to be based on one of the most outrageously creative ideas used for any opera. In short, it is a romance between two images, the image of King Kong, and the image of Pearl from the famous Vermeer painting. Modern technology should surely permit it to be staged and recorded for DVD! Hoban sees Kong as the idea of being "wild and wordless, lonely child of all the world" (242). Beard brilliantly utilizes Lacan to analyze the meaning of the opera. Lacan's mirror stage is based on the imaginary, as opposed to the symbolic or the real. The mirror stage involves alienation from the image and desire to be whole with the reflection, but this is unattainable. Kong and Pearl meet through a mirror, and thus the Lacanian analysis fits perfectly. The drama is driven by the desire for union, but this desire can never be satisfied.

Musically, the work uses 4-note shapes "obsessively" throughout (269), a perfect fit for the accordion, which gives TSMK a distinctive timbre. A brilliant twist is the character of Anubis whose name in the opera is "Death of Kong," who says "the idea of Kong is that he's dead." Clearly the story of Kong and Pearl is related to the story of Orpheus and Eurydice, so central to Birtwistle's music, and at the end of the opera the voices of Kong, Pearl, Orpheus, and Eurydice sing of their memories of love and desire for union -- in Lacanian terms, the recall of an imaginary order (275).

The libretto for "The Last Supper" (2000) is by American poet Robin Blaser. It conveys a stoic liberal humanism as it addresses the question of "how to reconcile Christ's teachings and the notion of community with humanity's history of war, genocide, inequality, and racism," and prominently features the nightmare image of the Messiah approaching in a tank. Birtwistle's music uses a 35-piece orchestra with no violins. Christ is represented by "the wind" -- glissandi in cellos.

Blaser sets out to salvage Judas from anti-Semitic persecution. According to the librettist, the opera's fundamental question "is set by Christ: who is the betrayer, and what has been betrayed?" Valid answers include both the betrayal of Judas since he merely carried out God's will, and the betrayal of Christ's message of love by the Church, with its hubris and complicity in wars and other crimes. Blaser is influenced by Dante, who abhorred materialism, religious cynicism, and political opportunism.

The Ghost (not Holy Ghost) is a female character who represents the spirit of the modern, secular age. There is no message of conversion or resurrection in the libretto. Blaser says he sees our time as characterized by "a sense of breakage," and says "the great belief system of Christianity is one of the things that has been broken." Blaser, author of The Holy Forest, is influenced by two writers of the Left: Jean-Luc Nancy's Inoperative Community, and Giorgio Agamben's The Coming Community. Both are influenced in turn by Heidegger's concept of dasein -- being-in-the-world.

I have become fascinated by Birtwistle's music in recent years, and it is frustrating that more of these works have not been recorded. (Apparently NMC plans to reissue "Gawain" soon.) While much of the musicological close reading is lost on me, I find much that is valuable in Beard's book as someone who appreciates the music. I give it four stars rather than five merely to indicate that you, like me, might find it of use more as a reference work than as a book to read straight through for pleasure.

The Superlearner Myth: The Organic, Long-Term Approach to Effective Learning, by Angelos Georgakis

Superlearner is the same as superforgetter. Research in cognitive psychology, which goes back more than one hundred years, has shown that effective learning is hard and requires time and effort. You can feel like a superlearner by consuming tons of information in record time, but, in that case, you compromise the long-term results of your efforts.

Your memory is not a hard disk to download books in a matter of seconds. Effective learning means you spend enough time to encode and give meaning to new information. You need to interpret, associate, interrelate, and compare new information with already known information. There are no shortcuts to this process.

Today everyone is talking about speed-reading. However, research has shown that testing, or the practice of retrieving information from our memory, is the most effective way to immunize new information and helps to prevent memory loss. Even more telling, the harder the retrieval, the better your memory will be.

Today it has become fashionable to talk about mastering a skill in ten hours, or learning a language in seven days, or attending an all-day crash course on the weekend. However, multiple studies in cognitive psychology have shown that massed practice gives you an illusion that you can master a skill quickly, but the results are only temporary. Instead, effective learning means you space your practice, you allow some forgetting to happen, you make mistakes, you squeeze your head, or you feel mental pain. Does it sound bad? Maybe it does, but this is 100% healthy, optimal, long-term learning.

This book aims to talk you through the truth about how you can learn effectively. This truth is not the author’s truth; it’s the truth of the science of learning. The suggestions here may go against your intuition because effective learning, as we will see, is counterintuitive. By following these suggestions, though, you will soon become a more sophisticated learner with an increased ability to assess and improve your learning.

We live in a fast-paced world where competition is high and acquisition of new skills is key to professional success. We can’t afford to lose time. We want to see quick results in anything we do. However, we need to understand that we are not machines. Don’t give your learning more speed. Instead, give it motivation, curiosity, and space. Only then will it produce the fruits you are looking for.

but I am glad that he did not do so
By Stephen Garratt
I found this little treatise very enlightening. I have always been prepared to slog at learning, so the remarks on counterintuition explained a lot of my own learning behavior to me, although I had never put the phenomenon into words. Mr Georgakis' ideas about self testing, learning, retesting at intervals and the avoidance of cramming might be seen as common sense, but people rarely put them into practice. It is possible to produce a weighty academic tome on this subject, but I am glad that he did not do so. By keeping his brief to a few well defined and quite revolutionary points he wrote a work that can examined in little time, tested, cross referenced and retested to be stored in our memories for our long term solid benefit.

Eye-opener for most learners
By Amazon Customer
This is a must-read book for every teacher, every student and everyone else involved with learning and education. Through research and convincing analysis, Angelos presents a very strong case about how learning is a slow and gradual process. The sooner we realise this, the better. He also provides suggestions on how we can learn how to learn. I work in the education sector and the book has provided me with a lot of clarity in my thoughts. Well presented, I only hope this book had more pages!
