Fascinating Incite into the world of BDSM
By Amazon Customer
"OK, so I like to read about stuff other than Norwegian crime thrillers and this is certainly in the other category. The writing is well done, the imagery truly fantastic and it makes a great conversation piece on the coffee table!

There seems to be a never ending supply of new books about BDSM and fetish lifestyles but most follow the same of formula of how I was a nice girl who ended up whipping men. This is no such book. It takes it from a very different viewpoint of why men want to be treated the way they do by a dominatrix. It does not set out to explain it, rationalize it or anything so deep. It just sets out, very well, to allow you the reader to read in men's words why they seek these services.

If you're looking for a biography, this is not the book for you. If you interested in reading why men do this, then this is a pretty good place to start."

Three women, haunted by the past and the secrets they hold

Set at the end of World War II, in a crumbling Bavarian castle that once played host to all of German high society, a powerful and propulsive story of three widows whose lives and fates become intertwined—an affecting, shocking, and ultimately redemptive novel from the author of the New York Times Notable Book The Hazards of Good Breeding.

Amid the ashes of Nazi Germany’s defeat, Marianne von Lingenfels returns to the once-grand castle of her husband’s ancestors, an imposing stone fortress now fallen into ruin following years of war. The widow of a resister murdered in the failed July 20, 1944, plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler, Marianne plans to uphold the promise she made to her husband’s brave conspirators: to find and protect their wives, her fellow resistance widows.

First Marianne rescues six-year-old Martin, the son of her dearest childhood friend, from a Nazi reeducation home. Together, they make their way across the smoldering wreckage of their homeland to Berlin, where Martin’s mother, the beautiful and naive Benita, has fallen into the hands of occupying Red Army soldiers. Then she locates Ania, another resister’s wife, and her two boys, now refugees languishing in one of the many camps that house the millions displaced by the war.

As Marianne assembles this makeshift family from the ruins of her husband’s resistance movement, she is certain their shared pain and circumstances will hold them together. But she quickly discovers that the black-and-white, highly principled world of her privileged past has become infinitely more complicated, filled with secrets and dark passions that threaten to tear them apart. Eventually, all three women must come to terms with the choices that have defined their lives before, during, and after the war—each with their own unique share of challenges.

Written with the devastating emotional power of The Nightingale, Sarah’s Key, and The Light Between Oceans, Jessica Shattuck’s evocative and utterly enthralling novel offers a fresh perspective on one of the most tumultuous periods in history. Combining piercing social insight and vivid historical atmosphere, The Women in the Castle is a dramatic yet nuanced portrait of war and its repercussions that explores what it means to survive, love, and, ultimately, to forgive in the wake of unimaginable hardship.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of April 2017: Much of the buzz touting Jessica Shattuck’s WWII novel, The Women in the Castle, likens it to Kristin Hannah’s wildly popular, The Nightingale. It’s an apt comparison—both feature brave women overcoming nearly unfathomable obstacles. But their association actually made me hesitant to pick it up. Surely the well of enthusiasm for Nazi-related dramas has to be running dry, and if it hasn’t, then an author really needs to “bring it.” Well, that well is still brimming as it turns out, and Ms. Shattuck certainly does. The women referred to in the title are widows of three conspirators involved in the assassination attempt on Hitler. Marianne von Lingenfels, whose moneyed pedigree has protected her from the more unsavory punishments of the war, has been tasked with locating the other resistance widows, and ensuring their safety. But she is no superhero. Along with the nave Benita and inscrutable Ania, they represent the everyday, ordinary Germans swept up in the extraordinary, who survived as best they could when the right thing to do wasn’t always clear (or even an option). If you’re curious about what it was like to be a typical citizen during this time--if you struggle to comprehend how a society could become a breeding ground for Hitler’s brand of evil, The Women in the Castle offers some insight. It also draws some chilling parallels to things brewing in the political climate today. Jessica Shattuck has provided a worthy addition to the canon of great WWII literature, one that answers why the appetite for this genre has not abated: In many ways, we still haven’t learned the lessons that history has to teach us. --Erin Kodicek, The Amazon Book Review

Engrossing!
By Mary Lins
"The Women in the Castle" by Jessica Shattuck, is an engrossing novel about three German women after WWII and it includes all the usual Big Themes of right/wrong, guilt/innocence, revenge/forgiveness.

Marianne, Benita, and Ania, are the surviving wives of men who participated in the July 20, 1944, failed assassination attempt on Hitler (aka as Operation Valkyrie). Marianne, the strongest and the leader, promised to take care of the wives and children of the would-be assassins (all executed). In a rustic "castle" in northern Germany, the three very different women, with very different backgrounds and war-time experiences, band together to protect their children and each other in the chaotic days following the defeat of the Nazis.

I won't outline to plot except to say that the story is immediately interesting, and provides suspense and mystery as it unfolds over the course of several years. As a piece of historical fiction I learned some things I hadn't known. For example, just after the war and before the Cold War got into full-swing, there was a "Sprunkammer" or a "denazification council" that assigned Germans (including ex-Nazis) to groups based on their "guilt" and they were officially sanctioned accordingly. Shattuck's novel is well-researched and it spun me off on several illuminating Wikipedia trails.

One big question the novel asks is, can you love someone without knowing or caring what atrocities they may have committed in the past? Can one truly have a fresh start? Can it be deserved? Walking down the street in Germany after the war, what kinds of suspicions would one harbor? Did that man execute Jewish children? Did that woman rat out her neighbor? It's a fascinating time and place in history. I also HIGHLY recommend: "City of Women" by David Gillham, and "Skeletons at the Feast" by Chris Bohjalian.

Disappointing WWII Fiction
By NancyBailey'sMom2009
I really looked forward to reading this book so much that I bought it in hardcover as soon as it came out. Big mistake! The prewar story was very shallow and did not give enough depth of character with the spouses to care about their destinies. After the war the storyline was very linear and the characters quite unlikable. The storytelling itself was quite thready and lacks emotional depth. They actually spend very little time in the castle except for the five years after the war which they skip through pretty quickly. I also couldn't understand how Marianne and Benita could afford to live the lifestyle they do after the war. I'm sure the Nazis confiscated all of their capital. Found that part to be unbelievable but the rest of the story unlikable. Very disappointed!

Women and Nazi Germany
By Andrea Kihlstedt
This is an interesting view of the Nazi Era from the perspective of the women who lived through and survived that period. It poses moral questions in a thoughtful and provocative way. When you read this book, you can't help but ask yourself what you would have done.

This fascinating account of an unusual research project challenges many assumptions about how young children learn and how best to teach them. In particular it turns upside-down the commonly held belief that professionals know better than parents how to educate and bring up children; and it throws doubt on the theory that working-class children underachieve at school because of a language deficit at home. The second edition of this bestselling text includes a new introduction by Judy Dunn.

Young Children Learning
By Allegro1066
This is a remarkable book - a must read for every parent, parent-to-be, and teacher! I read it shortly after its publication, and was so impressed that I called and also spoke with Barbara Tizard, its British author and educational researcher. I also gave individual copies to the members of the board of our local school district, who were debating whether to open a program for three-year-olds in our middle-to-upper class neighborhood.

To compare the intellectual effectiveness of school and home, respectively, of preschoolers in two-parent families on public assistance, Dr. Tizard wired the preschoolers with tiny microphones and followed them into the two environments. As I remember, the experiment was rather lengthy - perhaps several months long.

The outcomes were stunning - even to the researchers, as I recall; across the board the children experienced dramatically more teachable moments and had more intellectual leaps in their homes than they did at school. Because instant responses by parents were able to satisfy immediately the questions children asked, the children were able to grasp a concept at the exact time they exhibited curiosity about it. If my memory serves me correctly, the individual interactions at school between the child and the teacher were at a bare minimum, and mainly were limited to comments such as, " Johnny, please give the glue back to Susie," or "Tell Jenny to quit kicking me", rather than intellectually speculating about why something floats or sinks.

On the other hand, even the poor home offered a ripe environment for the opportunity of satisfying curiosity. After arriving at home after a morning at preschool, a little girl, while eating her lunch, asked her mother why the roof was slanted. The recorder picked up the mother's reply and subsequent discussion (snow, gravity, etc.) as both mother and child pondered this profound scientific concept.

Fascinating!

Review
Sequel to Little House in the Big Woods, and true story of the author's own childhood, and of the days when her father, feeling that civilization was coming too fast to the Big Woods, uprooted his little family and took them, via covered wagon, to Kansas. Good Americana - and a first rate tale. Personally, I liked it certainly as well, perhaps better than the other. (Kirkus Reviews) --Kirkus Reviews

From the Back Cover

The adventures continue for Laura Ingalls and her family as they leave their little house in the Big Woods of Wisconsin and set out for Kansas. They travel for many days in their covered wagon until they find the best spot to build their little house on the prairie. Soon they are planting and plowing, hunting wild ducks and turkeys, and gathering grass for their cows. Sometimes pioneer life is hard, but Laura and her folks are always busy and happy in their new little house.

About the Author

Laura Ingalls Wilder (1867–1957) was born in a log cabin in the Wisconsin woods. With her family, she pioneered throughout America’s heartland during the 1870s and 1880s, finally settling in Dakota Territory. She married Almanzo Wilder in 1885; their only daughter, Rose, was born the following year. The Wilders moved to Rocky Ridge Farm at Mansfield, Missouri, in 1894, where they established a permanent home. After years of farming, Laura wrote the first of her beloved Little House books in 1932. The nine Little House books are international classics. Her writings live on into the twenty-first century as America’s quintessential pioneer story.

Not as good as previous version
By S.C.C.
I teach 5th grade and I purchased these books to complete my class set of these books. This new version is missing all of the wonderful sketches that made Laura's books famous. Why? The font is also smaller and the page numbers are different, making it difficult for the kids with this version to follow along. I'm most upset though at the lack of the illustrations that children have come to love since Laura wrote these books. Disappointing. Get the older version (without the photograph on the cover) if you can get it.

I bought 3 of these books for my daughter's classroom last year and they loved the book. There were no torn pages, the binding and the cover were all intact, with minor or no bending. The product was useful and appreciated. It was shipped in a timely manner and arrived just in time for the students to use.

About the Author

Carol R. Ember started at Antioch College as a chemistry major. She began taking social science courses because some were required, but she soon found herself intrigued. There were lots of questions without answers, and she became excited about the possibility of a research career in social science. She spent a year in graduate school at Cornell studying sociology before continuing on to Harvard, where she studied anthropology primarily with John and Beatrice Whiting.

For her Ph.D. dissertation she worked among the Luo of Kenya. While there she noticed that many boys were assigned “girls’ work,” such as babysitting and household chores, because their mothers (who did most of the agriculture) did not have enough girls to help out. She decided to study the possible effects of task assignment on the social behavior of boys. Using systematic behavior observations, she compared girls, boys who did a great deal of girls’ work, and boys who did little such work. She found that boys assigned girls’ work were intermediate in many social behaviors, compared with the other boys and girls. Later, she did cross-cultural research on variation in marriage, family, descent groups, and war and peace, mainly in collaboration with Melvin Ember, whom she married in 1970. All of these cross-cultural studies tested theories on data for worldwide samples of societies.

From 1970 to 1996, she taught at Hunter College of the City University of New York. She has served as president of the Society of Cross-Cultural Research and was one of the directors of the Summer Institutes in Comparative Anthropological Research, which were funded by the National Science Foundation. From 1996 until 2009 she served as executive director of the Human Relations Area Files, Inc. (HRAF), a nonprofit research agency at Yale University. She was appointed President of HRAF in 2010. She is also currently Past-President of the Society for Anthropological Sciences.

After graduating from Columbia College, Melvin Ember went to Yale University for his Ph.D. His mentor at Yale was George Peter Murdock, an anthropologist who was instrumental in promoting cross-cultural research and building a full-text database on the cultures of the world to facilitate cross-cultural hypothesis testing. This database came to be known as the Human Relations Area Files (HRAF) because it was originally sponsored by the Institute of Human Relations at Yale. Growing in annual installments and now distributed in electronic format, the HRAF database currently covers more than 410 cultures, past and present, all over the world.

Melvin Ember did fieldwork for his dissertation in American Samoa, where he conducted a comparison of three villages to study the effects of commercialization on political life. In addition, he did research on descent groups and how they changed with the increase of buying and selling. His cross-cultural studies focused originally on variation in marital residence and descent groups. He has also done cross-cultural research on the relationship between economic and political development, the origin and extension of the incest taboo, the causes of polygyny, and how archaeological correlates of social customs can help us draw inferences about the past.

After four years of research at the National Institute of Mental Health, he taught at Antioch College and then Hunter College of the City University of New York. He has served as president of the Society for Cross-Cultural Research. From 1987 until his death in 2009, he was president of HRAF.

Peter N. Peregrine came to anthropology after completing an undergraduate degree in English. He found anthropology’s social scientific approach to understanding humans more appealing than the humanistic approach he had learned as an English major. He undertook an ethnohistorical study of the relationship between Jesuit missionaries and Native American peoples for his master’s degree and realized that he needed to study archaeology to understand the cultural interactions experienced by Native Americans prior to contact with the Jesuits.

While working on his PhD at Purdue University, Peter Peregrine did research on the prehistoric Mississippian cultures of the eastern United States. He found that interactions between groups were common and had been shaping Native American cultures for centuries. Native Americans approached contact with the Jesuits simply as another in a long string of intercultural exchanges. He also found that relatively little research had been done on Native American interactions and decided that comparative research was a good place to begin examining the topic. In 1990, he participated in the Summer Institute in Comparative Anthropological Research, where he met Carol R. Ember and Melvin Ember/

Peter Peregrine is professor of anthropology at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin and external professor at the Santa Fe Institute in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He also serves as research associate for the Human Relations Area Files. He continues to do archaeological research, and to teach anthropology and archaeology to undergraduate students.

Closed minded and slanted
By Jennifer Hutchinson
I did not enjoy reading this textbook! Instead of presenting facts and practicing the open mind preached by the authors, I found the writing opinionated and one-sided. I usually do not mind reading textbooks, but I got MAD when reading this one. Turned me off from anthropology forever! There were some good points and interesting ideas, but most of the time I was arguing in my head with what I read!

BORING. FLAT. & INSUFFICIENT INFORMATION.

I am in absolute conjunction with the other reviewer about this book. The writing is dry, the author isn't always objective, the concepts presented are trivial and would barely and I mean, barely, pass as an introductory resource for even middle-schoolers. When I finished my class (which I should've dropped), I wanted to BURN this book!!!

I, too, became quite upset while reading this book and arguing with the content I read. Not to mention that it is written in such a dull manner; I just couldn't get into reading it (and I'm a bookworm!). I am now completely uninterested in Anthropology!!!

Anthropology leeches off of Sociology, Archaeology, Psychology, Geography, & Religion studies and this book presents no real defined path of what the real purpose of Anthropology is. The majority of the case study examples provided were from professionals in other fields and not many actual anthropologists! Essentially, after reading this book you will only briefly have been informed about bones and prehistoric societies and their tribes. (In short, Wikipedia could teach more than this book does.)

There's a total lack of critical analysis, modern relevance, or interactiveness for the reader. It's formatted in an extremely flat, lecture style. The examples given are bland and lack depth - the author drops names/case studies but gives no supporting evidence/background information and leaves you clueless or forces you to do the research yourself, if you even care that much...

I've read a lot of textbooks (particularly in the social sciences) and this, by far is THE WORST ! If you have a genuine desire to learn Anthropology, make sure this ISN'T the required reading AND make sure you have a lively professor that will make this dull subject even slightly interesting.

(P.S. I decided to burn the book after all!)

Gospel centered, concerned with doctrine, timely and relevant
By Jude M St John
Book Review - Setting Our Affections Upon Glory

In an essay written in 1985, theological giant J. I. Packer is said to have commented on the preaching of D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones: "Through the thunder and the lightning, I felt and saw as never before the glory of Christ and of his gospel ...." Though the "thunder and lightning" of this great preacher may be difficult to apprehend by reading his sermons in a book, the "glory of Christ and of his gospel" reverberates through every page of this recently published collection of Lloyd-Jones sermons entitled Setting Our Affections Upon Glory. This compilation of the Good Doctor's preaching is notable for its gospel-centeredness, its emphasis on doctrine, and its relevancy and timeliness.

The nine sermons in Setting Our Affections Upon Glory are permeated by a gospel-centeredness that, with regularity, brings the Christ, the cross, and the resulting Calvary-wrought salvation before the eyes of the reader. Lloyd-Jones does not miss an opportunity to remind the listener, or reader in this case, of the issue of "first importance" (1 Cor. 15:3). He continually reminds us, with creativity and conciseness, that the essence of Christianity is "the great doctrine of the atonement. You cannot be a Christian without this" (118). His emphatic and insistent proclamations of "Jesus Christ and him crucified" (1 Cor. 2:2) give evidence of the great value and singular priority he attributes to the gospel: "Reconciliation! There is nothing in the whole world today as valuable as this. To be reconciled to God! To know that our sins are forgiven! The wealth of the universe cannot purchase this. There is nothing more valuable" (95). These sermons will help you understand why Packer "felt and saw as never before the glory of Christ and of his gospel."

D. M. Lloyd-Jones, as well as the many manifestations of his ministry, is known for the priority he places on doctrine in general and Reformed doctrine in particular. He frequently admonishes the reader to note the importance of doctrine in the life of the Christian. He reflects that the early church "was a gathering of people who had undergone a profound change as a result of listening to the apostolic preaching" (53) and that, in terms of the church both then and now, doctrine "comes before fellowship, and unless our fellowship is based upon doctrine, it is not a Christian fellowship" (55-6). These are strong words for one who was noted for his high regard for the church. For the author, doctrine's importance rested on the fact that "you cannot preach the gospel without doctrine" (117). Lloyd-Jones valued preaching and thus he valued doctrine. The prominence doctrine holds in Lloyd-Jones' mind is evident throughout the book: In the church, "teaching and doctrine must have the pre-eminence, the precedence, the priority. They must always come in first position" (61). This book is evidence that he was a preacher who esteemed doctrine.

This collection of Lloyd-Jones' preaching was originally delivered in 1969. However, the timeliness and relevancy of these nine addresses is conspicuous. It seems the great preachers have a penchant for framing things in such a way so as to reveal the issue that is common to all ages. They deal with the heart of the matter. For instance, Lloyd-Jones warned of the church's dangerous practice of prostrating themselves to the idol of popularity: "The church asks: What do people actually want? What do they like? What do they think? And we pander to them" (50). This is a remarkable assessment of the modern church and this preacher saw it in his day. Or consider this concern that is raised: "I have sometimes feared that we are rapidly getting to the stage in which there will only be two or three preachers-if even that many-in the world. And the rest of the world will be listening to them on tapes or on television or something else" (110). We now know that the "something else" the author was concerned about are downloads and podcasts and Youtube and iTunes. His apprehension on this matter is almost prophetic as we see the danger of blogsniffers and website groupies following an increasing smaller number of big name preachers. His sermons are applicable to us today because he saw the unchanging dangers that the church faced. Ponder his foreboding of the treacherous nature of tolerance: "It is that in our fear and dread and horror of being called narrow we could swing so far to the other extreme and in the end be so wide and so broad and so large that we lose our landmarks altogether and end by not knowing what the real meaning of the word Christian is ... A charity and a tolerance that is prepared to include everything! That seems, to me, to be the greatest danger" (146). That is an incredibly accurate accusation against today's churches by a minister who preached over 40 years ago.

For its pervasive gospel-centeredness, for its continuous concern for doctrine, and for its timely relevancy, this volume of sermons is noteworthy. A preacher will often be lauded by those who he leads. But when a preacher is admired and acclaimed by his peers, both great and small, it is likely his preaching will be efficacious and edifying. These sermons by D. M. Lloyd-Jones are just that. They have power in written form that build us up and encourage us. Setting Our Affections Upon Glory is a welcome addition to a growing number of this great preacher's published sermons.

I recommend this book.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher for the purpose of review.

Setting Our Affections Review
By C. Hennessey
One of the premiere preachers of the 20th Century, Martyn Lloyd-Jones is brought back afresh in Setting Our Affections Upon Glory which is a publishing of nine of his sermons focused around the gospel and the church. If you have never heard or read a Lloyd-Jones sermon, then this is a perfect starter for you. Crossway Publishing has beautifully brought these sermons into print in order for the edification of the church and Christians. Focused around Scripture, Martyn Lloyd-Jones stays focused on the Word while preaching on important topics of the gospel, the church and soteriology.

Here are two of the best lines in this book from his sermons:

"For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory." Do we react like that as we look at the worst, as we look at life at its darkest and its starkest? (16)

The church allows the world and the pew, perhaps, to determine what is to be the truth. (...) There is only one thing to do as we face this issue, and that is to go back to the New Testament itself. It is here and here alone that we discover what the Christian church really is. (50)

I would highly recommend you buy a copy of Setting Our Affections Upon Glory and allow it to penetrate your heart with the Truth of God's Word.

SERMONS FROM DR. LLOYD-JONES LAST TRIP TO THE STATES
By STEVE MARTIN
Martyn Lloyd-Jones, SETTING OUR AFFECTIONS
UPON GLORY (Nine Sermons on the Gospel and
the Church); Crossway--Dr. Lloyd-Jones last trip
to the U.S was to the Pensacola Theological
Institute in Florida in 1969. These sermons were given
to people who were vacationing with a purpose.
They wanted to grow in the grace and knowledge
of their Savior. Not even the threat of a major
hurricane could dampen the spirits of those who
attended. (Readers will note Dr. Lloyd-Jones
reference to the approaching hurricane.) These
sermons are not just for fans of Lloyd-Jones, but
for all lovers of the Christian faith.
