A very big disappointment. Hand drawn art, no dialogue. A waste of time, paper, and space on Amazon. I feel like I wasted money buying this. If you want to see hand drawn artwork with no descriptions as to why these are on the pages, then go for it, but if you prefer to have a book that will actually educate you about the rich culture of Argentina, then find a different book. You will not find it here.

Auster's Austerities

This collection of essays, interviews, and prefaces explores the theme of "Hunger" (whether spiritual or artistic) in modern fiction, poetry, and art. Auster's essays celebrate (or provide a general overview of) works (or careers) of important artists, such as Knut Hamsun, Samuel Beckett, John Ashbery, William Bronk, Georges Perec, and Franz Kafka. Kafka is the subject of two essays in the book, and his story "A Hunger Artist" is for Auster a sort of template or emblem for the seriousness of the modern artist's task. Hunger, for Auster, seems to be a kind of rebellion, a reluctance to collaborate with the failures of Western culture, and yet it is, at times, both purifying and self-destructive. Auster does not present simple resolutions regarding this predicament. Rather, he appreciates the noble struggle each of these artists has waged. And though Auster seems to admire each of the figures he writes about, he is not uncritical of them. His piece entitled "Kafka's Letters" reveals his deep admiration of Kafka, yet Auster does not present the Czech author as a "literary giant", but as a man--an amazingly insightful, intelligent, generous man, who, despite his troubled inner life, managed to remain committed to his art and to his friends until his excruciating last moments. The piece exalts Kafka by humanizing him, deepening our admiration of both Kafka and Auster. "The Art of Hunger" ends with "The Red Notebooks," an interesting meditation on coincidence, which includes fascinating anecdotes from Auster's own life. In all, this is a satisfying collection of prose pieces that fans of Auster's fiction (and/or fans of the artists discussed in the book) should thoroughly enjoy.

A delightful read!

Review of Stevenson’s Treasure, by Mark Weiderhanders

Such a good read! Probably not be the most professional way to start the review of a new
book on the literary scene, but in this charming novel, we follow with growing pleasure
the unusual relation between a younger man and an older woman from different countries, backgrounds, educations and experience. Will the married lady win her freedom? Will the penniless, unsuccessful writer ever reach success and marry her?

There is a long journey on foot, alone across a hilly part of southern France with an uncooperative donkey. This gives Robert Louis Stevenson an opportunity to tell Modestine, the donkey, about his overprotected childhood, since he suffered from such ‘weak lungs’ –– good description of severe pleurisy–– so that he wasn’t expected to reach adulthood. Stevenson is kind, sensitive, intelligent(to write Dr Jekill and Mr. Hyde he had to be unusually bright!) and a fine observer who keeps writing essays and stories, in spite of the absence of his lack of publishers.

There is a handsome, unfaithful but successful business man who threatens to take their children away from their mother if she continues seeing Stevenson, whom he calls a boy. Fanny, with a heavy heart, tries to distance herself from an adoring Louis, who never fails to find her.

As a businessman’s wife, Fanny is miserable. They are mismatched. She suffers from depression, which she calls brain fever. Her husband is devoted to their children and a good provider. How how can she divorce him to live with Louis, whom she loves, when he can barely support himself, let alone her and her children?

Plenty of travels, letters, hopes and drama fill this lively novel, whose ending, cleverly negative, is a success.

My criticisms are minor. A careful editor should have spotted the use of the a comparison of a furious person to a pressure cooker ready to explode. Pressure cookers were not commercially available for use till well past the eighteen seventies. The pronoun ‘who’ is used in place of ‘whom.’ In the afterword, the editor failed to change, ’principLE characters’ to ‘princiPAL characters,’ since the author clearly spoke of of the main, or major characters.

A satisfying, delightful romantic tale, full of believable characters, realistic period details, humor and lively scenes.

Part of the fun of reading new authors of biographies of somewhat elusive historical characters is the discovery of great stories and great story tellers. Mark Wiederanders tells a great tale of Louis Stevenson, a fascinating character. Though, obviously, greatly fictionalized, the externals are true. Louis's treasure is a fascinating character in her own right. Many, I suspect, will have some difficulty with the story of their relationship, the lengths to which Stevenson went in order to pursue his dream of marriage to his enamorata is told with a great sense of what it is like to chase after a great love.
Some of the writing could have used a bit more editing (hence the four stars rather than five) but I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a wonderful story wonderfully told.

The "before he got famous" story of a celebrated author

(Throughout the review I'm going to abbreviate Robert Louis Stevenson to RLS because homeboy has a long name and I don't have all day to spell it out 45 times in one review.)

Fanny Osbourne is barely keeping it together. One of her children has died and it's landed her in an asylum in France for "melancholia". The doctor there suggests that she goes to an artist colony nearby where she can find therapy in her painting and spending time with her daughter Belle. She gets more than she bargains for when she meets and falls in love with RLS. He isn't the famous author yet, he's more of a scraggly wanderer with a persistent cough due to a lung condition but the attraction between he and Fanny is swift. There is the complication that she is married, has two kids (one, is closer in age to RLS than Fanny is) and lives in America. She eventually leaves France, assuming that this is the end of her romance. But it is not.

RLS travels across the ocean and then across the United States to join Fanny in California. His doctor tells him before he leaves that the trip will almost certainly kill him. It nearly does. (That could be the subtitle of this book: "Almost everything nearly killed him. The fact he lived to write anything is darn near miraculous"). Fanny is shocked and surprised and thrilled and horrified at his arrival. She had been making a real effort to make a clean break from him and try to mentally leave him behind and now his scraggly blonde face is there.

The rest of the book details what happens next! Should they be together? What about the kids? If she divorces her husband she will be penniless and it's not like RLS is rolling in the dough, so what would they do? What will his family think? Will RLS live long enough to figure any of this out with Fanny since he keeps not eating and getting sick?

There's a kind of curdling moment when RLS sees men setting fire and hacking a part a dead whale carcass. Glad that this book wasn't scratch and sniff!

Here is what kind of grinded my gears about this book (and it really doesn't have anything to do with the book or the writing or anything like that).

-Belle is all concerned her daughter is a "trollop". Uuuuhh can we talk about how you and RLS were running around basically in public in France and in California and kind of flaunted it in front of everyone including the kids? If she is a trollop, who do you think she learned it from? Pot meet kettle, kettle meet pot.

- I had a hard time cheering for any of these characters. Everyone's complicated and messy and that's fine, but I like to have someone to cheer for. Personal preference.

But it was an interesting, easy read that was well paced. If you have an interest in forbidden romance, art, or RLS I definitely recommend it for you!

About the Author

Jack London was an American author, journalist, and adventurer. London s early careers as sailor, fisherman, and prospector provided inspiration for his later writing, and it was only when he returned from the Klondike that London decided to focus on social activism and journalism. He soon became a popular magazine columnist and author, and a prolific commercial writer, penning over two dozen novels, and numerous short stories and poems. His most famous works include The Call of the Wild, White Fang, The Sea-Wolf, and the short stories To Build a Fire, and An Oddyssey of the North. London died in 1916.

Not for the faint of heart

This is a wonderful book, as is its prequel, Jerry of the Islands. It's a great dog story. But be warned, if a child is to read this book it should be under the guidance of an adult prepared to explain the extremely racist characters and situations. The story is no fluffy puppy story. It is exciting, the locations exotic, but some of the situations are brutal - it's a Jack London story after all, and the 'N' word appears at least a million times. Still, I'm not one for censorship, and it is a great opportunity to talk about just what happened to people of color, how they were treated, and why they might be justifiably angry about it.

Michael, the brilliant Irish Terrier - a must read for dog lovers

I happened across this book while looking for stories about Irish Terriers. I wouldn't normally read Jack London; his stories always seemed more to my brother's liking. However, this book quickly grabbed me because a lot of it is written from the dog's perspective. And those passages are spot on. Michael reminded me so much of my own Irish Terrier and how he thinks and reasons. It really got to my heart. When I finished reading, I made a donation to the ASPCA. And although I don't know much about Jack London, I'd bet he had an Irish Terrier himself, for sure.

Not as good as "Jerry" but a treat for Dog Lovers and London Fans

Less engaging than "Jerry of the Islands" but a good read. A must for Irish Terrier owners.

Caution, this is London's expose of the brutal training methods used by the trainers for the animal acts of the time. Half the book is descriptions of the typical abuses, some suffered by Michael, some by the animals around him.

This was London's last book and he was sick, tired and depressed during this time of his life. It's not among his best but it is powerful stuff, as is all of London's writing.

Great (Fairly) Unbiased Overview of Korean History

Wonderful Resource on Korean History

I had been looking for a good history book on Korea that could give an overview of Korea's history and culture without being overly dry and especially without being overly nationalistic. This is the book that I had been looking for and that I wish I could have read before going to live in Korea for a few years.

The book is very well organized and each chapter gives a small paragraph "abstract" on the forthcoming chapter. Interspersed within the text are various "pictorial essays" which at first I feared would be irrelevant and distracting. Instead they are absolutely fascinating and really complement the text. The author uses them, as well as many other references to present Korea not just from a historical list of happenenings but also from the impact of music, cultual diffucion, and other issues that impacted the people, and therefore the history. This is in addition to his easy-to-read style of writing that doesn't bog down with pseudo-intellectualism... it reads quick and clean and is very interesting without being dry.

Being a fairly small overview, he does cover some material, especially modern topics, in a good general way without a lot of depth or time. A glance though the rear of the book gives up his sources and a way to get further depth though.

Being a very handy size, this book can be tucked away for travel quite easily for anyone going to Korea for fun, work or martial arts. I'd highly recommend this book for Global Studies/World History teachers, Korean style martial arts enthusiasts, travellers to East Asia and anyone interested in Korea. Excellent reference book!

Bad For Beginners

This book is very well written but it is a bad place for beginners to start. The author clearly expects the reader to have a working knowledge of East Asian history and culture. This was my first book on East Asian history and I was frequently confused by the many vague references to Chinese and Japanese history. I had to get online and look up about 20 different people or events in Japan or China that were used by the author, but were not explained at all. Every facet of Korea is 'similar to' something from China or Japan that I've never heard of. Korean art, for example, is described by saying 'Like Chinese art, except for these three little differing details.' For someone who hasn't studied Chinese art, this is not very illuminating. Now the ONLY thing I know about Korean art is those three little details. It would have been great if I had studied Japan and China and just wanted to know how Korea fit in with the rest of Eastern Asia, but this book is not for East Asian beginners.

interesting introduction but has some flaws

I'd bought this book just before a trip to Korea this autumn.

The good piont is that it gives you a good idea of Korea's fascinating history from ancient times to presentday and if you're travelling to the country you will feel like you have a lot more context (if you visit any tourist sites, you'll notice that a lot of the explanations assume you already have this background)

The bad points are two: one is that the author seems rather defensive about the nastier bits of Korean history which I think is a bit patronizing at best and also takes away from the credibility. The other is that because it's trying to cover so much ground at times it feels like a big list rather than a coherent narrative, but that I guess is normal given the breadth to cover in just a couple hundred pages.

The only book our 10-month old sits still for!

He gets bored with regular old board books, but this one really captures his attention (he'll sit through it 2-3 times in a row!) There are many different animals, so you can use a lot of different voices. Cute illustrations.

This is my 1 year old's favorite book

My 1 year old son got this for his birthday and loved from the first time I read it. He loves "peeking" under the flaps and finding the different animals. The bright colors are wonderful, and this is a nice change from the Board type books we usually read. You can use many voices for the different animals and he has learned the animal sounds from reading this book. It is fabulous and I am going to buy the other ones in the series.

This book is the definitive biography of Morihei Ueshiba.

There is not a more complete work on this subject to be found in the English language. O'Sensei was both enigmatic and cryptic, and this book clears up much of the cloudiness. From rare photos to rare personal insights, it is a must-have in any Aikido collection.

ABUNDANT PEACE is akidoka John Stevens' rather quirky (coffee table paperback) biography of the rather quirky Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), the founder of Aikido, usually referred to by Aikidokai (but interestingly, never by Stevens himself in this book) as O'Sensei, the Great Teacher.

Stevens unhesitatingly says that Ueshiba was "undoubtedly the greatest martial artist who ever lived" and this claim may well be true. The diminutive (5'0'') Ueshiba was able to pin sumo wrestlers with one finger, evade multiple attackers with such grace that he literally became invisible to them, and could defeat an opponent simply by uttering a "peculiar kiai."

Ueshiba ultimately became a universalist, but very little in the first half of his life indicated that he would do so. Ueshiba was idiosyncratic at best (he was given to pounding his head against rocks hundreds of times a day in order to thicken his skull and enjoyed uprooting small trees barehanded in contests of strength), temperamental, moody, and given to egoistic adventurism (he founded an agricultural colony on barren Hokkaido, later leaving it suddenly and without explanation, and was intimately involved in the Great Mongolian Adventure, a Japanese expansionist incursion into China for which he was nearly hanged by that country's leaders).

The one constant in Ueshiba's life was martial arts, and even here his choices seemed strange. As a young man he came under the tutelage of Sokaku Takeda, a hard-drinking, violent and mendacious street fighter who was also the last Samurai-trained warrior in Japan. Although Ueshiba later broke with Sokaku, early Aikido clearly owes much to the man.

Following his break with Sokaku, Ueshiba became a close disciple of Onisaburo, the founder of Omoto-Kyo, a messianic Shinto sect. The odd Onisaburo was part charlatan, part clairvoyant, part spiritualist, and part Liberace (at least in his theatricality). In the 1920s, Japan was undergoing a spiritual crisis as those who followed the old ways finally died out and modernity and militarism became key. Dime store messiahs seemed to be on every streetcorner, but Onisaburo maintained his credibility. The Omoto-Kyo sect became so popular that it was violently suppressed by the government around 1932. A few selected personages (Ueshiba among them) were spared. In Ueshiba's case, his martial arts prowess was such that he was appointed to teach the Japanese military. It may seem ironic that Ueshiba (whose name means "Abundant Peace") was teaching Aikido ("The Way of Peace") to what was unquestionably one of the most bellicose organizations ever formed, but it was not the first, nor would it be the last, time that irony ruled Ueshiba's life.

In 1942, Ueshiba underwent the second of his three great enlightenments in which he perceived the oneness of all life, soon thereafter resigning his offices and becoming a committed pacifist. Stevens rather cynically points out that his second enlightenment occurred not long after Pearl Harbor, when Ueshiba's retreat from public life would mean that he had little chance of being marked as a war criminal after the Pacific War, a war he knew Japan could not win. Be that as it may, Ueshiba is proof positive that human beings can grow and change throughout their lives. There is no greater difference ever seen than between the dour middle-aged Ueshiba, looking like a Mexican bandit while being photographed in leg irons as a Chinese prisoner during the Great Mongolian Adventure, and the aged will o' the wisp bearded sage who created a kakemono which reads, "The lovely form of heaven and earth lovingly created by the Great God, Father of Humankind."

Stevens rather bizarrely divided ABUNDANT PEACE into three sections. "The Man" is a straightforward, honest, but rather colorless recitation of the facts of Ueshiba's outer life. "The Martial Artist" addresses Ueshiba's development of Aikido over his lifetime from a form of attack and defense into a philosophy of love. "The Message" is a discussion of Ueshiba's inner life, the spiritual underpinnings of Aikido, the importance of ki (life energy) in the practice, and (though Ueshiba was Shinto not Buddhist) Aikido's relationship especially to Zen (Stevens himself is a Professor of Buddhist studies, which explains this otherwise inexplicable focus on a faith not Ueshiba's own). Despite Ueshiba's Omoto-Kyo Shinto practice, so much of his writing is identical to Zen philosophy that the cross-pollination of Japanese culture is completely evident throughout.

The problem with this three-way division of ABUNDANT PEACE is that each section presents us a dynamically different Ueshiba, dividing him into three parts. Unlike Caesar's Gaul, it would have been better if Stevens had given us a unified portrait of this incredibly complex, self-contradictory, earthy and spiritual man, and brought him alive. As it is, ABUNDANT PEACE is a fine if brief introduction to the world of Aikido and it's amazing founder.
