About the Author
Ms. Burwick has more than twenty (20) years of Information Technology experience. She is an entertaining and informative speaker/instructor and has done extensive consulting as a CMM/CMMI Subject Matter Expert. She has provided consulting and appraisal services for large and small commercial businesses, as well as government agencies. Ms. Burwick acquired hardware experience while employed with a large systems integrator in the Midwest. She configured systems and networks, primarily for large school districts and universities. She also oversaw the installation and integration of those systems. Ms. Burwick is that valuable combination of functional and technical in the same persona. In the software world, Ms. Burwick worked her way up through the ranks as a developer/analyst, DBA and software engineer. Then Quality Manager and Process Engineer, now specializing primarily in the CMM/CMMI for the last 10 years. Ms. Burwick continues to further develop and refine a method for real process improvement that she uses today. Her method includes proven solutions to overcome typical challenges encountered in a change effort, and facilitates CMMI Level 2 and 3 compliance more quickly and effectively than has ever been done before. Great templates based on CMMI DEV v1.2 but still very useful for v1.3 with minor changes

Excellent content and templates based on CMMI DEV v1.2 (not 1.3) but with a few changes it is all usable to create handbooks that will provide a CMMI compliant process documentation in line with the requirements of OPF and OPD process areas. The hard work is in the institutionalization of the processes in your organization. This book does not contain the process area documentation for CMMI SVC but several areas are actually core and apply to both DEV and SVC (e.g. PP and WP, IPM and IWM, PMC and WMC, etc.)

'Surviving' and dealing with the fall-out from the end of a romantic relationship with someone who was suspected of having 'Borderline Personality Disorder', or 'BPD' is one of the hardest things I have done, if not THE hardest.

Whilst in my two-year relationship, I had to endure emotional outbursts, devaluation and emotional abuse. But after the relationship was over, these were replaced with self-doubt, shame and toxic-guilt. Was I right to leave? Have I 'failed' again? Was it as bad as I thought it was? My 'reality' was skewed. And recovery isn't easy. I can tell you that from personal experience, and that's an understatement. But it was those feelings that prompted me to write my book. It was cathartic, and writing it has helped me heal.And I hope if you read it, it will help you either understand the 'Borderline' relationship you find yourself in at the moment, or understand the feelings you have since you left your relationship.

In 'recovery' from possible 'addiction' to a Borderline relationship, you need to be emotionally strong. Some people use their 'faith' to help, and others use support groups such as 'Co-dependants Anonymous'. These are all important. But in my experience, it takes a profound deal of self-analysis and introspection to fully achieve 'closure' from such a dysfunctional relationship. As a 'non-BP' it is very easy to 'blame' the 'BPD' for all the chaos that probably ravaged your relationship, but in my opinion, you also have to look at yourself.

Why did I 'choose' to stay in such an abusive relationship? Why did I 'choose' to get into such a relationship in the first place? And what is it about ME that the 'BPD' was so attracted to in the first-place?

All these are extremely difficult questions, and instead of focussing on the characteristics of your (ex-)partner and their 'Borderline Personality Disorder', I found the path to self-healing to be self-analysis and self-discovery. In examining yourself, you may realise that you are 'co-dependant', and possibly even narcissistic yourself. These are important realisations to make, and 'own-up' to, if you are to move beyond the self-doubt and shame associated with the end of such a relationship.

In my opinion, self-analysis and self-discovery is ESSENTIAL in order to be able to do this, and from my own experience I would recommend reading other books by Alice Miller and Melody Beattie. Yes, it is going to be hard, probably the hardest thing you have ever done in your life, but you ARE NOT ALONE. I'm still here, and you will be too.

I am now a 'survivor' of the abuse and trauma I experienced in such a destructive relationship, and I am no longer a 'victim'. And you can be too. Just listen to, and believe in YOURSELF. The very best of luck in your own journey of self-discovery, and my thoughts and compassion are with you.

This book was very helpful to me. Mr. Kelleher has written a well-balanced account. I had read one other account of a relationship with a female borderline written by a male and it was more from a finger pointing perspective, which this book is not. I was in a relationship with a borderline who I would say was about a 5 on a scale of 10. I think that Mr. Kelleher's partner was closer to a 10. The dynamics of both people in this book were VERY familiar to me, though. What I liked about this book is that the author was also looking for the part of himself that brought him to the relationship and kept him going back for more. The self-responsibility. That helped me to see "my stuff" and to change and grow. Self-awareness is always good, but sometimes painful. I decided to read the book so that possibly I could get some personal insight from the story, which I did. The discussion was somewhat repetitive, but in a way...it had to be. That is part of the agony in these "dances".
Pros: Kelleher's definition of the opposite of love: ambivalence. I would ad to that definition, and refine it saying: That the unhealthy opposite of love is hate, the healthy opposite of love is ambivalence, with a little forgiveness and empathy thrown in.
Cons: OK...this is my pet peeve. Mr. Kelleher needs a proof reader to go thru his manuscript and make spelling and word corrections. There are MANY. There are even some words that are not words. There are also words that are misspelled repeatedly throughout the book. This is "literature" and should be presented with pride and polish and professionalism. Anything less takes away from what the author is trying to impart. It always makes a book less-than. Always. I find that MANY e-books are loaded with these kinds of mistakes and I do not understand it. It is soooo easy to correct a manuscript today with spell checkers, electronic dictionaries etc. So I alway find this to be unfathomable.
With corrections I could give the book 4-1/2 stars, especially for what is available in this subject matter. It is an honest heart-felt story.

Interesting, but the "quotations" drove me insane

I came across this ebook in my quest to learn more about BPD after ending a relationship with someone whom I strongly suspect has the disorder. He has elements of OCD, but also displays most of the signs of BPD as well. My mother does also... go figure.

This book is very obviously self-published and could use a good editor. The author uses way too many quotation marks where they are not needed. It was distracting and annoying to have random words with quotation marks around them - I'm not really sure why people do that, but it's awful to read.

Bad writing aside, the material itself was enlightening. I could definitely relate to this guy's experience. I feel a little better reading about somebody else getting sucked into a BPD mess. The author goes into his childhood and how he was playing out his childhood wounds as an adult in a BPD/codependent relationship. That's exactly what happened to me.

As a person with Borderline Personality Disorder, I hope this book reaches the hands of professional mental health workers that have a broad knowledge of BPD. I believe that this would be another tool for professionals to see the view of a person without BPD.

What a tragic encounter the author endured. This book is very well written and shows a way of 'self' awareness.

I thank the author for putting this out there so that others can see that 'Borderline Personality Disorder' does exist.

Surprisingly good...

If you're a controlled nuclear fusion buff like myself, this book does a decent job transitioning from history and introductory information to real plasma physics. Doesn't just cover tokamaks, stellarators, and inertial fusion but also discusses mirror, pinched, and muon catalyzed fusion (real cold fusion). Surprisingly in a few paragraphs it alludes to the Farnsworth fusor too. Great variety and solid intro for people getting serious...buy it.

Good introductory text.

I was looking for an introductory text that was current and that would cover the most popular approaches. I didn't want something directed at the popular level (little or no math), but I also didn't want a text that would go into agonizing analysis of every plasma instability under the sun. There are many fine books on plasma physics (e.g F. F. Chen's "Introduction to Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion"); that is not what I was looking for and that is not the emphasis of this text.
This covers the basic physics and explains the basic concepts behind several of the more popular fusion approaches. The reader should have college level physics and calculus to get the most out of this book. I found it useful but not comprehensive (you can only fit so much in under 300 pages). So if you want to know the fusion cross-section of, say, p + B reactions, you'll need to locate other information sources. But you will find reaction cross-section tabulations on d + t, d + d, etc. reactions as a function of energy.

About the Author

Dr. Richard de Neufville is Professor of Engineering Systems and Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at MIT. He is known for his development of engineering systems analysis and many texts, most recently, Flexibility in Engineering Design. He has consulted and taught on airport planning “on all continents except Antarctica” for over 40 years. Among his many honors are the Francis X. McKelvey award for Aviation, the FAA award for Excellence in Education (with Amedeo Odoni) and several other teaching awards, the Irwin Sizer award for the Most Significant Contribution to MIT Education, the Chevalier des Palmes Académiques (France), and an honorary doctorate from the Delft University of Technology.

Amedeo R. Odoni is Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics and Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at MIT. He specializes in the use of operations research and other quantitative methods in planning, designing, operating, and evaluating airport and air traffic management systems. Over the years he has consulted at Amsterdam, Athens, Boston, Milan, Montreal, Munich, New Delhi, New York, Sydney, Stockholm and many other airports, as well as several Civil Aviation Authorities. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of INFORMS, and the recipient of many awards for his research and teaching. He has served, among other positions, as Co-Director of MIT’s Operations Research Center and of NEXTOR, the National Center of Excellence in Aviation Operations Research, established by the FAA in 1996.

Peter P. Belobaba is Principal Research Scientist at MIT, where he teaches graduate courses on The Airline Industry and Airline Management. He is Program Manager of MIT’s Global Airline Industry Program and Director of the PODS Revenue Management Research Consortium. Dr. Belobaba holds an MS in Transportation and a Ph.D. in Flight Transportation Systems from MIT. He is a lead author and editor of the recently released book, The Global Airline Industry. Dr. Belobaba has been involved in research related to airline economics, pricing, competition and revenue management since 1985. He has worked as a consultant on the development and implementation of revenue management systems at over forty airlines and other companies worldwide. He has also published articles in a variety of journals, including Airline Business, Operations Research, Transportation Science, Journal of Revenue and Pricing Management, and Journal of Air Transport Management.

Tom G. Reynolds works at MIT Lincoln Laboratory and is a specialist in aviation operations and environmental impact mitigation. He has particular interest in the development of advanced technologies and operations for improving efficiency and mitigating environmental impacts of aviation, and has helped deploy many improvements at major international airports in the UK and USA. He has a Ph.D. in Aerospace Systems from MIT, has worked on the research staff at MIT and the University of Cambridge. He has won several national awards including the AIAA Orville & Wilbur Wright Graduate Award and was a UK Fulbright Scholar.

One hundred years ago, common belief held that science began with the Renaissance. Researchers have discovered, however, that navigation, architecture, medicine, and astronomy and other fields were all essential to life in the Middle Ages and were also viable fields of scholarly endeavor. Many of these areas developed independently in isolated parts of the world. Sharing of information came with increased trade.

This volume is the eleventh in the Routledge Encyclopedias of the Middle Ages series (formerly known as Garland Encyclopedias) and follows in the tradition of focusing on one geographical area or theme. It uses six broad categories to define its coverage: "Apparatus, Equipment, Implements, Techniques"; "Biography"; "Disciplines"; "Geographical Places"; "Institutions"; and "Scientific Genres." At the beginning of the volume, there is an alphabetical list of entries as well as a listing arranged by the six themes. The biographical articles that comprise the largest category reflect a scope that encompasses Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa and includes religious and political as well as scientific individuals. Some examples are Peter Abelard, Roger Bacon, Ibn Rushd (Averroes), Maimonides, and William of Ockham.

Overall, this is a well-crafted reference source. The articles themselves are clearly written, signed, and well documented with bibliographies. The black-and-white illustrations are appropriate and enhance the text. Compared to Scribner's Dictionary of the Middle Ages (DMA) (1982-1989), specific articles are less complex in Routledge and have a more straightforward style. As an example, while the DMA has one 18-page article on mathematics, the Routledge has articles on Algebra and Arithmetic, each no longer than two pages. Although the DMA will likely be considered the benchmark, Routledge is clearly geared toward a somewhat less--scholarly audience whose goals require shorter answers. Philip Kotler is S. C. Johnson & Son Distinguished Professor of International Marketing at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. He received his master’s degree at the University of Chicago and his Ph.D. at M.I.T., both in economics. Dr. Kotler is author of Marketing Management (Pearson), now in its fifteenth edition and the most widely used marketing textbook in graduate schools of business worldwide. He has authored dozens of other successful books and has written more than 50 books and 150 articles in leading journals. Converse Award, given by the American Marketing Association to honor “outstanding contributions to science in marketing.” A recent Forbes survey ranks Professor Kotler in the top 10 of the world’s most influential business thinkers. And in a recent Financial Times poll of 1,000 senior executives across the world, Professor Kotler was ranked as the fourth “most influential business writer/guru” of the twenty-first century.

Dr. Kotler has served as chairman of the College on Marketing of the Institute of Management Sciences, a director of the American Marketing Association, and a trustee of the Marketing Science Institute. Really interesting read

I have to say, I'm pretty surprised by the 3 star reviews here. This is one of the best textbooks I've ever had to deal with. The book does not seem too fact-heavy at all; it moves through the chapters at an almost conversational pace. It is very well written and pretty entertaining in my opinion. I would open this book to do the assigned reading and find myself reading a segment completely unrelated to the assignment because I was genuinely interested in what it was saying.

This book also seems very up-to-date. I was surprised by some of the examples the book references because it feels as if they'd only happened yesterday.

I suppose this review doesn't really matter because if this is the book your professor chose, you don't really have the luxury of choice. So I guess I'll just end on the note that I really enjoyed this book, and I think that you will, too.

I brought the book college so it's not like I bought it for enjoyment. As far as the material in the book, it seems pretty straightforward which is always a plus especially, when some textbooks feel like you're trying to decode world secrets (didn't find it super interesting lol)

About the Author
Allan Liska is a Consulting Systems Engineer at FireEye Inc. and an "accidental" security expert. While Allan has always been good at breaking things, he got his start professionally working as a customer service representative at GEnie Online Services (a long defunct early competitor to AOL), where he would spend his off hours figuring out how users had gain unauthorized access to the system, booting them off, and letting the developers know what needed to be patched. Unknowingly, this was leading him down the path of becoming a security professional. Since then he has work at companies like UUNET, Symantec, and iSIGHT Partners helping companies better secure their networks. He has also worked at Boeing trying to break into those company networks.
In addition to his time spent on both sides of the security divide Allan has written extensively on security including The Practice of Network Security and Building an Intelligence-Led Security Program. He was also a contributing author to Apache Administrator's Handbook.

Geoffrey Stowe lives in San Francisco and is an Engineering Lead at Palantir Technologies. His network security work has included vulnerability research, reverse engineering, incident response, and anomaly detection. There was a time when he could translate byte code to assembly without looking at a manual. Geoff started Palantir’s commercial business in 2010 and built its first platforms for distributed, large scale data analysis. He graduated from Dartmouth College with a degree in computer science.

Important security reference on DNS; where security is often neglected

That you are reading this review, and my ability to post it are due in large part due to the Domain Name System (DNS). DNS is Wikipedia describes it is a hierarchical decentralized naming system for computers, services, or any resource connected to the Internet or a private network. It associates various information with domain names assigned to each of the participating entities. Most prominently, it translates more readily memorized domain names to the numerical IP addresses needed for the purpose of locating and identifying computer services and devices with the underlying network protocols. Quite simply, DNS enable you to use google.com and other intuitive and easy to remember sites, as opposed to an inconsistent set of numbers like 172.217.5.14.

In DNS Security: Defending the Domain Name System authors Allan Liska and Geoffrey Stowe write that since DNS works so seamlessly, people often forget how critical it is. And more dangerously, those responsible for its operation often ignore the many DNS security risks in that they never thought to fully secure it when initially deployed. The underlying simplicity of DNS actually makes it a prime target for attackers.

The authors note that while DNS is a core Internet component, it’s something that most administrators set and forget. In fact, when the time comes for security configuration changes, there may not even be anyone in the organization who knows how to implement those changes.

For anyone tasked with anything related to DNS, this is an important book. It covers DNS for both Windows and Linux; including how to correctly implement DNS security.

Often forgotten topics such as DNS firewalls, response policy zones and more are discussed. The authors also have a section detailing DNS outsourcing. For organizations that lack an internal DNS expert (and that is pretty much most organizations) outsourcing some or all DNS tasks and services can make both good business and security sense.

Outsourcing may be especially valuable for those firms who’ve found their domain names have expired due to non-renewal in the past. This is a trivial, but often overlooked administrative task. If a domain expires, a firm may find themselves having to quickly reconfigure DNS, and often pay significantly to get their original domain names back.

The authors do a great job detailing how to log and monitor DNS traffic. An interesting and powerful method they show on how to identify bad domains, particularly those used for spamming and malware, is to flag newly registered domains. The authors quote research that shows that new domains are often used for malicious purposes. When the identification of new domains is combined with data about the generic top-level domains (gTLD) and country code top-level domain (ccTLD), all of this data can be used as a powerful security mechanism. By entering that data into a SIEM, a firm can use that and other information to better protect themselves from DNS-based attacks.

The book closes with an overview of Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC), which is a set of tools and protocols meant to secure DNS. DNSSEC can fix many of the insecurities the book describes in the previous 140 pages, as it attempts to fix the Achilles' heel of DNS in that it was designed to be a scalable distributed system, without much of a notion to strong security.

With all the benefits DNSSEC affords, it’s underlying complexity and lack of global deployment means that DNS is currently, and for the not too distant future, will remain an incomplete and insecure set of protocols and services.

For any organization that takes network security seriously, DNS Security: Defending the Domain Name System is an important reference that should be required reading for any DNS administrator. The authors do a great job of showing how a little time and effort into DNS security can provide immediate and significant security benefits.

Geoff and Allan have done an incredible job making DNS Security come to life. The prose flows forth like poetry that dances playfully upon my aroused senses. The first chapter, especially, was as brilliant a treatise as I have ever read. It would seem hyperbolic to compare this to James Joyce's "Ulyses", but I honestly feel like no other comparison is as appropriate. Do yourself a favor and buy this book. You'll thank me.
