About the Author

Celia B. Fisher, PhD, Director of the Fordham University Center for Ethics Education and the Marie Ward Doty University Chair and Professor of Psychology, served as Chair of the American Psychological Association’s (APA’s) Ethics Code Task Force responsible for the 2002 revision of the APA Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct that, with the addition of language on human rights amended in 2010, is today’s current code. She currently serves as Chair of the Ethics Code Task Force for the American Public Health Association and Director of the NIDA funded Fordham University HIV and Drug Abuse Prevention Research Ethics Institute.  She has served as Chair of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Human Subjects Research Board, the New York State Board for Licensure in Psychology, the National Task Force on Applied Developmental Science, and the Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD) Committee for Ethical Conduct in Child Development Research and the SRCD Common Rule Task Force. Dr. Fisher was also a member of the APA Ethics Committee, the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Data Safety and Monitoring Board, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Committee on Clinical Research Involving Children, the IOM Committee on Ethical Review and Oversight Issues in Research Involving Standard of Care Interventions, the National Academies’ Committee on Revisions to the Common Rule for the Protection of Human Subjects in Research in the Behavioral and Social Sciences, and the Department of Health and Human Services Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Human Research Protections (SACHRP), for which she co-chaired the SACHRP Subcommittee on Research Involving Children, and she is currently a member of the NIH Societal and Ethical Issues in Research Study Section. She also served as the founding director of the Fordham University Doctoral Program in Applied Developmental Psychology and cofounding editor of the journal Applied Developmental Science. She is the recipient of the 2010 Award for Excellence in Human Research Protection Life Time Achievement Award and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Dr. Fisher has written commissioned papers on research ethics with mentally impaired and vulnerable populations for President Clinton’s National Bioethics Advisory Commission, for NIMH on points for consideration in the ethical conduct of suicide research and research involving children and adolescents, and for the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) on HIV education, treatment, and referrals for research participants. She co-chaired the national conference on Research Ethics for Mental Health Science Involving Ethnic Minority Children and Youth (American Psychologist, December 2002) co-sponsored by the APA and NIMH, and the first National Conference on Graduate Education in Applied Developmental Science (Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology, 1993).

Dr. Fisher has coedited eight books and authored more than 150 scholarly chapters and empirical articles on cognitive and social development across the life span and on research and professional ethics with special emphasis on the rights of racial/ethnic minorities, sexual and gender minority youth, children and adults with impaired decision making, and socially marginalized populations. With support from the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), she has studied how to assess and enhance the abilities of adults with developmental disabilities to consent to research and is currently working on a project to develop research ethics training modules for American Indian and Native Alaskan community engaged researchers. With funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), she has developed research ethics instructional materials for undergraduates, graduate students, senior scientists, and institutional review boards. She has developed assessment instruments to evaluate how teenagers and parents from different racial/ethnic backgrounds prepare for and react to racial discrimination, examined the validity of child abuse assessment techniques in institutional and forensic settings, and, with support from the NSF, NIDA, and the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR), has partnered with culturally diverse community members and frontline researchers conducting community-based research to understand their perspectives on the ethics of adolescent risk research and research involving adults involved in street drug use and related HIV risk. With support from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and the Office of Research Integrity, she has developed and validated measures assessing mentoring behaviors and departmental climates nurturing the responsible conduct of research in psychology graduate programs. Her research on intervention programs to reduce college students’ drinking behaviors has been supported by the Department of Education and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). She is also co-principle investigator on a National Institute for Minority Health Disparities grant on ethical issues in HIV research involving LGBT youth.

Absolutely great book.

This is one book I haven't regretted in buying. A lot of information for you to truly understand the ethical codes by which professionals/students may work. As a doctoral candidate in psychology, I needed a book that I could use like a journal, and this book proved above and beyond. Am not only recommending this book to all psychology students (graduate and undergraduates) but to all interested in ETHICS. The author truly put in a lot of work into her book.

This is a very helpful, clearly written book that is easy to read. I do wish, however, that I bought the hard copy​ instead of the kindle edition, because it is not as easy to use.

Kuki intuits the passionate woman behind Rinko's demure facade and, as the affair develops, the pair's white-hot lovemaking becomes ever more daring and experimental. Their outside lives suffer: Kuki is demoted to an even more demeaning position in his company, while Rinko's family disowns her. Watanabe's use of sight, sound, taste, touch and smell makes the sexual obsession of the lovers a personal, sensuous thing. Readers taste the sak? and delicate meals, and feel the velvet texture of cherry blossoms. The couple's freewheeling passion is contrasted with the rigidity of Japanese society, where everyone has a role to play. A look at the Japanese view of love

I knew the ending of this book before I bought it, but I still wanted to find out why I had heard so much about it, so I bought it. It is a beautiful story of middle aged love and how two people not from my own culture handle the situation. The story deals with eroticism, love, seduction, and the subsequent quilt of cheating on a spouse. I didn't agree with how the protagonists dealt with their situation but Wantanabe delves into their minds and souls so completly that their fate is understandable. The author made me feel as if I was there with them and inside their heads as they enjoyed each and every experience they shared, all the way to the end.

Mr. Watanabe has thrown paradise at us in the form of a book. "A Lost Paradise" is a wonderful story of love, passion and obsession. It's well written and well crafted and flows like the waves of a calm ocean gently awaking emotions each time they caress the shore. Mr. Watanabe presents us with a story of Kiko and Rinko who are two souls lucky enough to find that elusive "true love" in each other, only to realize all to quickly its frailty. The perspective of love presented is truly eastern in flavor and that makes it that much more endeering and enticing and exciting. A story like this places itself snugly with the likes of Shirin & Farhad, Zulekha and her lover, Jahangir and Anarkali.

A book you will never forget

The other commenter that said the book is about porn didn't give enough credit to the author. He created magnificent scenes and imagery with his prose. Yes, there was a lot of lovemaking described in detail in it but it was all about the love the two character shared. This book has haunted me since I was an undergrad. Please read it with an open mind.

Invaluable Resource

I recently attended Brooklyn College and as a Children's Studies minor I found this book invaluable to studying children's rights. The United Nations Convention Rights of the Child is summarized in the text. It is a document that consists of the rights of children regarding their rights to education, human rights, legal rights etc. There are also several law cases outlined regarding children. If you are a law student, sociology, psychology, humanities major, you need this book. If you are a teacher, college professor, social worker, parent or deal with children on any level, you need this book. I wish I had known of it earlier in my college career.

The BEST resource for AMD Info!!!

This book was a very easy read. A "must have" source of information if you've just been told you or a family member has AMD. There is also information about nutrition which is not only helpful for eye health but TOTAL body health as well. In the back of the book Dr. Samuel speaks about what you can do to start protecting your vision today... get on an eye vitamin. He mentions a couple different choices for comparison. I started taking the EyeScience - Macular Health Formula from EyeScience.com because they have more ingredients and a free trial.

Understanding Macular Degeneration

Was diagnosed 3 months ago with AMD (Age Related Macular Degeneration) so ordered 3 books on the subject to better understand the road ahead. This book, by Dr. Samuel, provides a comprehensive overview of what AMD is, and what to expect down the road. It also states clearly what vitamins and food products assist in slowing down AMD. Would recommend it for any patients or loved ones who need a better understanding of this debilitating affliction.

Great Resource for Everyone interested in Macular Degeneration

As a registered nurse I found it very refreshing to hear from a medical doctor about the importance of diet and nutrition and how it impacts our general health and the health of our eyes.

Dr. Samuel explains the role of inflammation in the development of macular degeneration and what we can do to reduce chronic inflammation through eating the right fats and carbohydrates.

I recommend this book to anyone who has macular degeneration, has a family member with AMD or anyone who wants to learn more about the prevention of AMD.

There are many business and professional subjects that the modern surveyor is required to be competent in or knowledgeable about in order to be successful (let alone licensed). There are ancient and fundamental issues such as making and analyzing measurements and conducting research for boundary location. There are business issues such as new developments in software and equipment. Lastly, there are practice issues related to governmental agencies such as local land development regulations or state wetlands rules. Good training is available on all of these topics. But there is one subject in the business of land surveying that receives much press, in this magazine and others, that for which one can find little, if any training-that is, testifying in court, and the related workings of courts.

Surveyors on the Witness Stand

I go to court several times a year to testify either on civil matters concerning my employer's interests in land, or regarding the location of criminal matters that may have occurred in the city. I was not aware that testifying in court was included in the job description of a surveyor. The subject was never mentioned during the interview. I was greatly surprised (and ill-prepared) when I received the first in a long list of subpoenas. In order to prepare for my first time on the witness stand, I called some friends who regularly testify as part of their practices. They told me not to panic, to be thoroughly familiar with my work, and to just answer the lawyer's questions. I called the lawyer who subpoenaed me and heard roughly the same words. I took their advice and my part in the trial was over quickly, but I knew I displayed nervousness out of all proportion to the small part I played. I wished I had some training on the subject; I wish I had read John Briscoe's book.

Surveying the Courtroom was written with two primary objectives in mind. First, to give the reader an acquaintance with courtroom rules and procedures for handling evidence, and the second, to show and explain how well "engineered" the legal process is for determining facts and resolutions. The author is a California attorney who seems to sincerely enjoy his work. He writes with enthusiasm and wit and displays open admiration for the capability of legal proceedings to find and solve problems. His examples are well-chosen and the sometimes humorous quotes he includes from literary figures and famous jurists keep the presentation of the technical material lively. The book may have come to your attention in the past. It was originally published by Landmark Enterprises back in the 1980s and was regarded then as a book specific to California. The author tells us in the current edition that due to a wider adoption of federal rules of evidence by more states, the book is now applicable in 40 of the 50 states. The states that do not adhere to the rules and procedures described in the book are Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Illinois, Missouri, New Jersey, and Virginia. Even though I reside and practice in one of the states that does not use federal rules, I found the book to be nonetheless useful and enlightening.

Two Main Sections

Surveying the Courtroom is divided into two main sections. The first is on the rules of evidence and the second is on the procedures of civil cases. The section on rules of evidence contains chapters on relevance, documentary evidence, hearsay, personal knowledge, proof, presumptions, privileges, judicial notice, and opinions. The section on civil trials has chapters on pleadings and motions, discovery, trial, and post trial proceedings. It also has appendices on depositions and certification of documents. This is an immense amount of material to be contained in a mere 200 pages. However, the author states clearly that his goal is to have surveyors become more acquainted with the courtroom, not to become experts on it. Most of us would be satisfied with just a simple understanding of the activity taking place around us. It is the general explanation of how courts and lawyers operate that makes this book so appealing to me. Its specifics may not apply to my state but the generalities do. After reading it I have a better idea of what is happening and why, and I can ask more informed questions of the lawyers on "my side." After all, I know how the city council does its business and I understand the role of various boards and commissions in land development work. Why shouldn't I have the same level of appreciation of the workings of the court? About the Author
Shoshin Nagamine was a practitioner and master of Okinawan karate-do for more than sixty years. At the time of his death in 1997, he held a tenth dan black belt, the highest rank of any active karate instructor in the world. He was also awarded the title of hanshi, the highest title in the art of karate, by the All Okinawan Karate-do Association.

Invaluable for ALL Okinawan/Japanese Martial Artists!

I have quite a large library consisting of approximately 300 martial arts publications. This tops all on my list. It contains actual photographs of Nagamine himself performing ALL original 18 Matsubayashi-Ryu Kata plus so much more.

It tops Funakoshi's book by a long shot because it is 100% Okinawan and does not vary from the most effective traditional Te. Whether you are a beginner or you are a master, this book should be your go-to guide. Nagamine Sensei was a very educated man that really knew what he was talking about.

This is my top 5 recommended reading:

2. Karate-Do Kyohan: The Master Text by Gichin Funakoshi
3. Goju-Ryu Karate-Do Kyohan by Gogen Yamaguchi

Great book.

I knew nothing of karate and its history and this book gave me a great insight. It explains its forms( katas) and why each technique was created. I grew up learning boxing, thai boxing, and grappling and was curious of karate and its many styles. My reasons for giving this read five stars is because it gave me a greater insight on real combat and not sport. Karate is great self-defence to learn, but the only reason I say this is because I have experience in fighting arts and I was told that karate was not affective in combat. I chose to have an open mind and found a great reason to learn karate. Enjoy.

A must-have for serious students of Okinawan Karate-Do

Nagamine Shoshin was a grand master (1907-1997) who created the Okinawan style of Shorin Ryu Matsubayashi and was well versed in Okinawan history and Karate-Do in general. His writing on the subject is clear and interesting, with historical stories of great masters who preceded him and detailed elements of his art, including photographic detail of each of the eighteen kata in his style.

Although I am not a member of the Matsubayashi organization, I have studied,practiced, and taught the principles and kata in this book for 33 years and hope to continue for many years to come. I believe that this book is a must-have for all practitioners of traditional Okinawan Karate-Do.

About the Author
Jane Piper Clendinning is professor of music theory at the Florida State University College of Music. She has published articles reflecting her interests in the history of theory, theory and analysis of twentieth-century music, computer pitch recognition, and computer applications in music. Her current research interests include theory and analysis of popular and world musics. She has served as the chair of the Advanced Placement Music Theory Test Development Committee and as an AP reader, and is a regular consultant at AP workshops and summer Institutes.

Elizabeth West Marvin is professor of music theory and former dean of academic affairs at the Eastman School of Music. She has published in the areas of music cognition, music theory pedagogy, theory and analysis of atonal music, contour theory, history of theory, and analysis and performance. She is past president of the Society for Music Theory and is currently co-chair of the Advanced Placement Music Theory Test Development Committee. Marvin is the 2012 recipient of the Gail Boyd de Stwolinski Prize for Lifetime Achievement in Music Theory Teaching and Scholarship.
