CHRIST'L DE LANDTSHEER is Associate Professor at the Amsterdam School of Communications Research of the University of Amsterdam. Her numerous publications and international lectures focus on political communications, rhetoric, European integration, and political psychology. When U.S. citizens were urged to "buy American" in the early 1930s in order to boost the national economy, African American thinkers such as Robert Abbott were quick to point out the irony: "Certainly we'll buy America first," he wrote, and went on to list the many products he'd now be buying--like steak dinner in a restaurant and theater tickets--which he had never been allowed to buy because of segregation laws. Not all Americans were as savvy as Abbott, however, and a tradition of "economic nationalism" that excluded from free trade almost as many within the borders of the United States as it did without enjoyed some success in those years, as it had in the years leading up to the American Revolution. Post-segregation, "Buy American" has become, among other things, an empty slogan for businesses who wish to appeal to patriotic sensibilities (like Wal-Mart, which just happens to also have "Buy Canadian" and "Buy Mexican" campaigns for its stores in those countries). In Buy American, Dana Frank advocates a "celebration" of the democratic ideal of such economic movements while refocusing the idea of "protectionism" to boost not simply corporate profits but the global interests of working people. The call to buy American-made products and protect U.S. jobs is nearly as old as the nation, dating back to the Boston Tea Party. Frank explores the historical and political context of the occasional "import panic attack(s)" that hit the country. In a chapter examining alternatives to "Buy Americanism," Frank focuses on internal racial issues and how they affect worker perspectives. In the 1930s Americans of African and Chinese descent wanted to embrace their international ties, not indulge in xenophobic economic policies. Black newspapers scorned the patriotism implied by the buy-American movement at a time when racial segregation was rampant. Frank also examines how unions have used the rallying cry to leverage larger salaries for workers, sometimes coming dangerously close to blaming overseas workers for U.S. economic woes. Howard Kendall is one of the greats of English football management and among the defining figures in the history of Everton Football Club. A schoolboy prodigy footballer, he first joined the club from Preston in 1967, forming – with Alan Ball and Colin Harvey –one of the most distinguished midfield partnerships ever witnessed in the English game.He won the League Championship in 1970 and later captained the club. He returned to Goodison as manager in 1981, reviving Everton as they embarked on the most successful period in their history.

Everton, Kendall said, was like a marriage, while other clubs he served – including Athletic Bilbao and Manchester City –were mere love affairs. Now he lifts the lid on a 30-year career that established his reputation as a managerial and playing legend.

Forthright, revealing and often very funny, Kendall’s long-awaited autobiography reveals his epic love affair with the game he served with such distinction, tracing the highs and lows, the characters, the laughter, the tears, and the many triumphs.

About the Author
Born in Ryton-on-Tyne in 1946, Howard Kendall started his illustrious football career with Preston North End as a 15-year-old wing half and in 1964 became the youngest player to appear in an FA Cup Final. He signed for Everton in 1967 and became one of the club's greatest players, winning the League Championship and serving as captain. He later played for Birmingham City and Stoke City, before turning to management with Blackburn Rovers. In 1981 he embarked on the first of three managerial spells at Everton, twice winning the League Championship, the FA Cup and the European Cup Winners Cup. Kendall was also twice crowned Manager of the Year. He left to join Athletic Bilbao in 1987, interspersing spells back at Goodison with interludes at Manchester City, Notts County and Sheffield United. Named Everton's Manager of the Millennium, he remains a popular face at Goodison Park and writes a weekly column for the Liverpool Echo.

Great low key approach to astrology

Not being an astrology beliver when taken to the exact location and time of birth, I do believe in the effects of natural forces affecting all living life. This book nailed us down to the type of furnisher and the art work we gravitate towards including the name of artists we have hanging on the wall. Very impressed with the Parkers approach to what I call a coffee table approach to astrology.

This is a very wordy, technical study on Royal icing. It describes in deptht how it work and how to use it. It may not be for the very beginner, but as a place to start, it's not to bad. Royal icing is slowly becoming my hobby, as I love piping work. Eddie Spence's book is still the most recommended RI book on my shelf. Enjoy!

Very Good, but has bias

The author knows a lot about Forex and overall this is a must-read book for anyone into this market. However, the author doesnt explain what ecn/stp/dd brokers are (and why you should run away from dd), tries to make the reader think that opening an account outside the USA is riskier, and finally states that leverage above 50:1 isnt a good thing. Perhaps all this is because the Author works for a dd (dealing desk) brokerage in the USA, where leverage is limited... All in all you should read this book, but be critical and dont take every statement as absolute truth, as there are interests in play here.

About the Author

Susan North is a curator in the V&A Fashion, Textiles and Furniture Department. Jenny Tiramani devised and produced patterns for the book with Melanie Braun, Luca Costigliolo, Armelle Lucas, and Claire Thornton. They are all founding members of the School of Historical Dress and worked together in the wardrobe department of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre between 1999 and 2005.

An amazing book for serious period dressmakers, 17th century

This is an amazing book. The curators of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London have picked treasures from their collection from the 17th century, (1600's) and virtually deconstructed them, included the pattern pieces and lace prickings if necessary, along with period stitches, so you can duplicate it. They show pictures, and then highly closeup details from the picture so you can see every stitch, how many plies in the thread, all that, at important points on the garment. They also go into some detail about the difference between a tailor and a seamstress. The pieces are x-rayed so you can see what went on inside the garment, to see repairs, corrections, etc., as well as fragments of the lace involved if it was metallic. They also include contemporary paintings of the garment discussed, or similar, so you can see it in context. It includes a 'robe', jacket, hat, shoes, supporters for the lace collars that framed the face from the rear, a falling band, all sorts of things. If you need/want to duplicate 17th century women's garments, this is the book for you, along with volume 1.

Excellent reference

A continuation of 17th Centry Women's Dress Patterns Book 1. Many of the articles of clothing are originally described by Janet Arnold.
Thiis book contains patterns and assembly notes for a gown in mulberry-colored velvet (it was mostly "recycled" in the 18th or early 19th century), a couple of jackets, bodices, a pair of stays, supporters for flat ruffs, and collars edged with flat lace, A brief discussion of "small articles", such as purses, busks, a hat and shoes round out the book.
As with the previous book, the authors have included detailed pictures - including x-rays - of the articles and step-by-step instructions as to how the garments were put together.
I am anxiously awaiting the next book on the 18th Century clothing from the V&A collection.

A Must Have Book for Those Interested in 17th Century Historical Garments and Costume Design

Fantastic! I bought this book thru Amazon while taking advantage of their special offer of 30% off of the most expensive book in my shopping cart - and this book was it. I have bought other V&A books while visiting the UK back in 2000. I see that the V&A has improved on their books. This book has drawings on garment assembly as well as pattern pieces. Amazing attention to details such as embroidery patterns along with embroidery and sewing stitch instructions. One must remember that the sewing machine did not exists (invented in1750's, 1st sewing machine design in 1790's, not widely used and practical until 1830's) during this period and everything was sewn by hand. Even had a couple of shoes thrown in there. Had instructions on braiding string for a purse or pillow. Had construction and description of a picadil sculpted firm shape that sits behind the neck. Also shown samples and construction of collar supporters. Some garments were X-ray and/or disassembled followed by pattern piece reconstruction and assembly of the piece. I'll study this in more detail over the weekend. Finally a book worth buying!

About the Author
Swami Satyananda Saraswati was born 1923 at Almora (Uttaranchal) into a family of farmers. His ancestors were warriors and many of his kith and kin down the line, including his father, served in the army and police force. However, it became evident that Swami Satyananda had a different bent of mind, as he began to have spiritual experiences at the age of six, when his awareness spontaneously left the body and he saw himself lying motionless on the floor. Many saints and sadhus blessed him and reassured his parents that he had a very developed awareness. This experience of disembodied awareness continued, which led him to many saints of that time such as Anandamayi Ma. Swami Satyanada also met a tantric bhairavi, Sukhman Giri, who gave him shaktipat and directed him to find a guru in order to stabilize his spiritual experiences. In 1944 at the age of nineteen, Swami Satyananda met his guru Swami Sivananda and came to live at Sivananda Ashram in Rishikesh. In 1947, he took the vow of sanyasin or monastic renunciation and became a swami. He served in different departments at the ashram for over 12 years. He did physical labor, edited the ashram's Hindi journal, wrote various articles and composed poems in both Hindi and Sanskrit. He wrote a translation and commentary in the English language of the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad by Swami Sivananda. Upon leaving the ashram in 1956, he wandered throughout India, Afghanistan, Nepal, Burma and Ceylon for the next 7 years, extending his knowledge of spiritual practices. He eventually found his way to Munger, in the province of Bihar. After establishing himself there, in 1963 he founded the International Yoga Fellowship and the Bihar School of Yoga a year later. He lectured and taught globally for the next twenty years and authored a number of books which are considered among the most revered in the field of yoga and yogic philosophy, and remain popular to this day. In 1988, he retired from active involvement in teaching and handed active work of his ashram and organization to his senior disciple Swami Niranjanananda. He lived in seclusion as a Paramahamsa Sannyasin performing higher spiritual and vedic sadhanas. Paramahamsa Swami Satyananda took "Sajeeva Samadhi" at his ashram in Rikhia, Jharkand on December 5th, 2009.

An incredibly clear and concise path to self-realization

There are a couple reviews here that do a great job of briefly explaining this book's amazing and unbelievably detailed contents so I won't head down that path. I will say that this is the path of yoga for the spiritually-inclined. Asanas are definitely part of the course, but in contrast to most other styles, a large amount of your time is spent in breath work and meditation which is not surprising given that Raja yoga (regarded as the most meditation-intensive supreme path of yoga) is a large part of Saytananda yoga. In fact, the more you progress, you realize that the asanas/postures are really just preparing you for meditation (kind of like stretching before running a marathon)

After practicing the first 7 lessons (7 months) of the book at home I decided to get serious about Satyananda Yoga and started looking for a teacher. As it turns out, there are only 4 fully accredited Satyananda teachers in North America (yes you read that correctly!) as it takes 3 to 5 years of intensive study to achieve that designation (as opposed to about 1 month to get a basic 200-hour yoga certificate elsewhere) and they have only started training Satyananda teachers in North America about 5 years ago. As all 4 of the teachers are in Cleveland Ohio, I took a flight out there to start my journey down this amazing path and hope to join the ranks of Satyananda teachers in a few years.

If you are a serious and disciplined aspirant and are interested in the practice of yoga for rapid spiritual evolution (as opposed to simply for health and fitness), then this is the path for YOU.

Comprehensive textbook on kriya yoga

This is a great book for people who are serious enough to start a daily yoga practice but for whom it is not feasible to go on an extended pilgrimage to an ashram or other yoga retreat. It does require a long-term commitment of regular practice and is not ideal for people who are absolute beginners or just dabbling.

The course within this book outlines the essentials of the entire yoga lifestyle and therefore includes information not only on yoga postures, but also on some of the esoteric practices including yogic breathing, cleansing, diet, philosophy, and chakra meditations. However, it is one specific system (or path) to yoga and should not be mixed with other systems i.e. if you choose this path, stick to this one alone.

Magnum Opus

I am a graduate student doing my Phd in Electrical Engineering but yoga and meditation are my hobbies (along with hiking and biking).
As some of the other reviewers have pointed out, this book is one of the most comprehensive, articulate and informative book I have found so far on meditation and yoga.
The book emphasizes that, 'There is no need to believe before hand that the techniques will work. Practice and you will know it to be true'.
The book starts with Hatha yoga, basic asanas and progresses through basic breathing techniques. Along the way it gives an in-depth analysis of various forms of yoga - Karma yoga, Raja Yoga, Bhakti yoga, etc.
It emphasizes that these different yogas complement each other and do not go against each other.
Some people might ask, well isn't there 'one god'. Shouldn't there be one path? This is a narrow way of looking at things. Sure there is one 'Mount Everest' but there are probably many different ways to get to the base-camp!
And each has its own scenic views and obstacles.
Same with the different yogas. Pick one that best suits your personality or better integrate a few of them - E.g. Karma yoga (This is easy to begin - If you work everyday!), Bhakti yoga (Prayer, devotion,etc) and Raja yoga (Breathing, Meditations,etc).
The book gives precise instructions especially in the breathing techniques and gives it to you in steps, so that you can measure your progress and move onto the next level.
The book moves onto advanced kriya techniques towards the end of the book (these require some level of mastery over postures and breathing techniques).
This is a book to keep for a lifetime and go through again and again to understand and integrate more knowledge as one progresses on the path.
