What a Life!

Wolfman, who left us a few years ago, led a life few of us can imagine. Influenced by the great DJ's of a long lost era, and music few of us have ever heard (I was born in 1949), Wolfman was a juve (short for juvenile deliquent, a term for a lost soul, or worse, someone headed into the hands of the justice system). But through an amazing string of circumstances he found himself first in a prestigious broadcasting school, then happened into a string of low power, low budget AM stations where he was allowed to create the persona of the Wolfman. His experiences with XERF, the Mexican powerhouse read like a poorly written thriller, except they are true. I couldn't put this book down and knocked of it's 350+ pages in two days. Buy this book, you won't be sorry.

HAVE MERCY! Relives the era but fails to capture THE VOICE.

HAVE MERCY! takes a wild ride through an important era of broadcast history. HAVE MERCY! captures the renegade spirit that led a few pirates and pioneers to take risks for entertainment sake. HAVE MERCY! does a superb job of describing the times and painting a picture of what those who ventured into early rock were up against. HAVE MERCY! helps us to better understand what made one white boy howl in the night - and others sing the blues. HAVE MERCY! makes clear the impact of radio in the early days of rock-n-roll. Its a classic expose' on pop culture. HAVE MERCY! shows the drive and determination and focus and endurance and high energy it took to succeed in a highly competetive industry. HAVE MERCY! catches the gimmicks and the glamour. HAVE MERCY! drops all the right names in all the right places. HAVE MERCY! doesn't shy away from revealing the hazards, the hardships, the dirty deals and the difficult decisions either. HAVE MERCY! is a roller coaster without seatbelts - a wooden one with plenty of bumps and sharp turns and deep drops along the way. HAVE MERCY! chronicles the life of a street tough kid with a dream - someone least likely to succeed - who beat the odds and made it. HAVE MERCY! relives the roots of rock as told through THE VOICE that spoke for a whole generation. HAVE MERCY! grabs onto the craziness of THE VOICE but doesn't see the flip side. Nothing is revealed about the inner stuff the Wolfman was made of. HAVE MERCY! tells the what, when and where of Wolfman's story but fails to communicate the why well enough for reader's know who the Wolfman really was. Its as if the author is writing from a distance - on the outside looking in when a more compelling biography would be told from the inside looking out. HAVE MERCY! recants the making of the personality . . . but fails to see beyond the legend the Wolfman had become. If I hadn't already known the huge impact Wolfman had on my generation, I'm not sure I would've comprehended it from the book. The author tries, but fails to show the true connection between THE VOICE and his listeners. HAVE MERCY! gets the facts but not the feelings. Its like when a record company measures the quality of a song by its sales instead of its message or craftmanship. HAVE MERCY! records details but never gets the big picture. The author never catches the vision. He rides with the Wolfman but never contemplates the reason. He notes the Wolf's charisma but never understands it. Its clearly too overwhelming to describe and so its treated almost like an after-thought. Not a lot of effort goes into getting to know Wolf's fans or measuring his impact on the world around him either. HAVE MERCY! never sees the Wolfman as a wholistic being - the author never gets into his soul the way I, the reader, wanted him to. And so, the Wolfman came across as a wild, but somewhat packaged, entertainer with a well inflated ego - rather than a dedicated spokesman whose main mission may have been just to spread some joy. What if the radio was nothing more than a vehicle to enable the Wolfman to accomplish that goal? HAVE MERCY! only suggests such honorable motives - instead the author dwells on stereotypical indicators that suggest the Wolf was mostly after fortune and fame. The Wolfman is depicted as a relentless industry climber willing to do just about anything to claw his way to the top. HAVE MERCY! had me asking whatever happened to Robert Smith? Did he completely disappear whenever the Wolf came out to play? If HAVE MERCY! were an instruction manual on how-to develop a strong stage personality the author would succeed in covering the steps and listing the most sensational ingredients needed - but he'd fail to give a clue as to what makes the recipe work. The author wasn't able to make me feel the fire and the author didn't manage to make the Wolfman bleed. His pen barely scraped the surface. Had it dug deeper it may have gotten to the heart of the story. A good book gets the info, keeps the pace and tells an interesting story - but a great book goes beyond the expected by sharing keen insights and by giving the reader something valuable to hang onto long after the last page is read. HAVE MERCY! is a good book, not a great one. I walked away exhausted from a really wild journey - but still not certain as to who I'd shared it with. That's a shame because I'm certain there was more to the Wolfman than the world ever got a chance to know, or this author ever managed to uncover.

Well told insider's view of racing over 40 years

This is a fun, informative look inside auto racing a 40 year period, starting in Mexico but mostly in Europe. It's properly titled memoirs rather than autobiography. Ramirez is generous and amusing in his tales about almost everyone in the book. He's too modest about his own role. For many pages in the 2nd half of the book it I wanted to know more of what Jo was doing and what the experience was like. The 2nd half also drifts a bit far into celebrities & parties. That plus too little introspection held the book short of 5 stars to me. Jo lived with racing's high level of fatalities in the first 20 years of the book. It must have been traumatic to take care of the broken Tyrrell after Francois Cevert's fatal accident. He honestly portrays each event. I don't envy him recalling these and writing about them accurately. A little more of Ramirez himself living through it all would give the book some extra depth.

Ramirez's focus is on personalities, anecdotes and memorable events. I don't think anyone else could deal honestly with the Prost-Senna conflicts from up so close and show such fairness with both sides. Even the biggest names here come across as regular people -- but I think it's a reflection of the author's personality. He enjoyed his life in racing and has written a book that carries that enjoyment with it.

I'll most likely be reading this one a couple more times because I enjoyed Jo Ramirez's story so much

My only regret with this book is that I didn't buy it much sooner! I'm a life long F1 follower and have bought quite a few books about the sport over the years, but this one really paints a picture and puts the reader right in the middle of it. I'll most likely be reading this one a couple more times because I enjoyed Jo Ramirez's story so much.

Great Formula 1 Racing Book

I have read many racing books and also many Formula 1 books. I can only say this ine is a must for anyone interested in Formula 1. Prominent racing events from 1963 through 2001 are described by the very well liked Mexican. Jo Ramirez knew every one from the Formula 1 team's mechanics all the way up to Ernie Ecclestone. This book is the best way to understand the very complicated personalities of Ayrton Senna and Ron Dennis from Mc Laren, as no one has described them so well before and he worked with them and also had a personal relationship with both. I will treasure my copy as the best racing book I own.

His postdoctoral schooling in nutrition and microbiology was completed at the Harvard School of Public Health, where he gained 2 years of postdoctoral research experience in immunology and nutrition.

From 1973 to 1974 Dr. Watson was assistant professor of immunology and performed research at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. He was assistant professor of microbiology and immunology at the Indiana University Medical School from 1974 to 1978 and associate professor at Purdue University in the Department of Food and Nutrition from 1978 to 1982. In 1982 Dr. Watson joined the faculty at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center in the Department of Family and Community Medicine of the School of Medicine. He is currently professor of health promotion sciences in the Mel and Enid Zuckerman Arizona College of Public Health.

Dr. Watson is a member of several national and international nutrition, immunology, cancer, and alcoholism research societies. Among his patents he has one on a dietary supplement; passion fruit peel extract with more pending. He continues to do research in animals and in clinical trials on dietary supplements and health including studies using omega-3 fatty acids in heart disease prevention and therapy. For 30 years he was funded by Wallace Research Foundation to study dietary supplements in health promotion. Dr. Watson has edited more than 110 books on nutrition, dietary supplements and over-the-counter agents, and drugs of abuse as scientific reference books. He has published more than 500 research and review articles.

A tribute to the love of books

I absolutely loved this novel. A.J. Fikry is the owner of a small, independent bookstore on the small Alice Island in the Northeast. He is cynical, cranky, and depressed...and not without reason. The recent death of his beloved wife has left him a widower at the age of thirty-nine. Their shared love of books seems to have died with his wife and A.J. is left behind with only bitterness.

Enter an absolutely delightful cast of secondary characters who populate the island and A.J.'s life. You're bound to love at least one - if not all - of them.

Next we have the unexpected hope and redemption of A.J. I'm not giving any spoilers here. Yes, it's a feel-good book. But it's more than that: it's a love letter to the power books have in our lives. If you have ever felt changed by a book, this novel will speak to you....you'll "get" it. And if you loved "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" or "Major Pettigrew's Last Stand" you'll find lots to love here, as well - not because the plots are similar, but because of the similar feel to the novels that comes from a good cast of eccentric townsfolk, a small community, and a sense of closeness among the characters.

So I'll leave you with this: if you love reading books, do not miss this one. (I wouldn't be at all surprised to see it made into a movie!)

On my of my road trip, I picked this book up because it had a story about a bookstore owner, which I hope one day to become. Never heard of the author, but I will always give a author and book a try. There is only a few words to say about this book -

I LOVE IT!!! I LOVE I!!!! and I LOVE IT!!!! more

A. J. Fikry is a lonely (his wife died two years earlier), snappish and cantankerous bookstore owner of Island Books in Alice Island. Sales has hit a slump and one of the most expensive book in his store, Tamerlane by Edgar Allan Poe, has been stolen. He has given up on the store, the people in the small community and the love of the books in his store and his heart. His books are how he has lived his life. His life experiences, relationships with bookstores, books and, in some cases if he really likes their work, authors, is really what I'm sorta made of. A life where when you read a book, you either lived it or what to live it. You talk, walk, breath, sing your day based upon the book you just finished reading or remember reading years ago.

It becomes a part of your memory where when you run into someone or something, you refer it to a book that had an impact on your life and that's how A. J. Fikry lived his life. Life just sucks for A.J. and I truly understand why, but one day out of the blue, a small package arrives at his store, a over the top and eccentric publication press sales women comes calling, and a chief of police who did not read much, until he was forced, not really forced, just wanted to keep an eye on A.J., became a savior and friend. Each word, each saying, each sub-story brings you closer to a book and another book and another. Inter wind into each character, especially A.J., is life at a bookstore or life in and out of a book. You will laugh, cry, become pissed and will love bookstores, especially independent book stores, over and over again. I literally cried when I finished this book, not because of something bad or good that happened in the book, but because I wanted to read more about each of the characters and see their lives unfold into the future.

A Well Written Puppet Show

Clever plot. Quirky characters. Technically good writing. Lots of literary allusions for people who care about that stuff. Unfortunately, I found very little depth to the characters and consequently didn't really care, except vaguely on an intellectual level, what became of them. 'Show, don't tell' is fine advice for writers, but I'm not interested in being shown a story if somewhere along the line my feelings don't become engaged.

This, I gather, is literary fiction. All in all, I'd rather have read some emotionally satisfying genre trash.

To my surprise, loved it!

I chose this book based on co-author Amie Kaufman, who is also co-author on the Starbound series, which I love. When I received the book, two things shocked me: its size and the strange format. But neither of these things should put off a potential reader.

Instead of narrative, this book is presented through transcripts of interviews describing events, email conversations, reports, graphic elements…it’s very odd. At first I found it intimidating, and wondered if I would be able to read a book in this manner, but after maybe 30 pages, you’re well into it.

Because of the format, it’s not truly like reading a 600-page book. The copy is very loose, since it mimics the format of the communication type instead of being running body text.

As for the story: Kady and Ezra have just broken up when their planet is attacked. As their ships attempt to escape from their long-term pursuers, Ezra is drafted into becoming a fighter pilot, and Kady becomes a hacker. They're trying to put together what is happening, why the artificial intelligence seems to have gone haywire, and a deadly disease is spreading among the survivors. Can two teens save them all, while getting their romance back on track?

You may be thinking, "This sounds like every sci-fi movie I've ever seen rolled together. Why should I read it in book form?" I promise, the story is really, really exciting the way it's told. Also, there are some twists and turns along the way. I went from "What IS this book?" to "Yep, get me the sequel, NOW!" once I had finished. Sequel will be an auto-buy, and can't come fast enough.

"AM I NOT MERCIFUL?"

I had never heard of Jay Kristoff. For that matter, I had never heard of Amie Kaufman, either. But, after reading their incredibly brilliant collaboration, Illuminae, I know who they are. They are my new rock stars.

Narrated in semi-epistolary form, Illuminae tells the story of the invasion of a small planetary mining colony, the outer space pursuit of its remaining refugees, a nightmarish virus, and the teenage couple that had broken up the day this all started. The first page is a letter to an unknown director stating the following files contain all the intel behind the attack and what followed. Using interviews, schematics, texts, emails, incident reports, computer data, journal entries, transcriptions of audio files, and creative and beautiful graphics to tell the story, this book is a captivating read. It’s a rollercoaster read. It’s the best book I’ve read this year. I devoured it in a day.

The beginning grabbed me and did not let go. Kady, a teenage girl from the mining colony, is telling an interviewer what happened the day of the invasion. She had just broken up her boyfriend, Ezra, and she was thinking of all the things she still wanted to tell the jerk when a warship started to bomb their school. Meanwhile, Ezra is telling another interviewer how he and Kady escaped from the ground troops and warship all bearing the logo of the corporation responsible for the attack. Terrified, they still bickered with Kady even throwing a punch at him.

The files continue to reveal how the warship chases the three ships carrying the remaining refugees. Kady and Ezra are separated from one another on different ships and over the months their lives take different paths. Kady becomes a kickass computer hacker driven to find the truth behind what is happening. And Ezra is conscripted as a fighter pilot who witnesses a tragic attack that the onboard military buries with lies.

The best parts of the book are Kady’s scenes. She’s fearless, funny, flawed and a hacker extrordinaire. And, by the end, we learn she is not someone to underestimate or cross. She’s vengeful and she gets in the last word. Perfect.

There are some huge twists that caught me with my guard down. There are sucker punches to the gut. It’s filled with pages of terrifying scenes and I found myself losing oxygen because I subconsciously held my breath. Tension, lots and lots and lots of tension. And perhaps, in my opinion, the strangest love triangle ever. I hate love triangles, but this one was so interesting.There's also a couple of pages that directly remind me of the movie, 2001: A Space Odessy. High five to the authors. Also, Illuminae has the most creative book cover and jacket that words alone cannot describe. You have to see it and touch it to experience it. It alone tells a story.

Do I love this book? Absolutely. Have I pre-ordered the next in the trilogy? You bet I have. Am I perturbed it doesn’t come out until October 18th? Duh. But, I can wait for my new rock stars. They’re worth it.

Illuminae is a space opera style story told almost entirely in computer files, and at some points through the point of view of an AI. The main characters, Kady and Ezra are two mostly normal teenagers who broke up the morning their planet was invaded by a fleet of warships, sent by a powerful corporation--BeiTech--to gain hold of the resources they mine on their illegal settlement. The action picks up immediately in this space-race. Filled with political intrigue and moral dilemmas, Illuminae is thought provoking and leaves the reader desperate for more.
It's not just the unique format-- that still manages to contain beautiful writing-- or the hilarious cast of characters. It's the gripping plot that left me breathless half the time. I devoured this book, I finished six hundred pages in one sitting and I could have read six hundred more.
I would wager I average reading a couple books a week, so I read quite a few good books, and even some great ones, but this is quite possibly one of THE best books I have ever read. I cannot recommend it enough, and I cannot wait for the sequel.
