{My Thoughts} – Jessica turns thirteen and receives a special rose quartz necklace from her moms best friend. Her moms best friend also happens to be the midwife that had assisted in delivering her thirteen years ago. Her mom and Nancy the midwife seemed to have hit it off well and had chose to remain friends. Jessica viewed Nancy more as an Aunt figure then just her mothers best friend.

They is a lot of strange that takes place in this book. It all dates back to when Jessica and two other babies Heather and Tom were all born on the same day. They were also all delivered by Nancy. Apparently Nancy was doing some top secret research and experimentation with colleague of hers and they had stumbled upon an interesting discovery.

The research had started because her colleague had wanted to find a way to cure his pregnant dying wife. He had tested some of their discoveries on his wife, however, the day he had run his last test his wife had died. His son Max however was doing wonderful.

Jessica starts learning that she is able to become invisible when her friend Izzie tells her just as much, when she wakes her up during class. Jessica freaks out but eventually learns to accept it and control it. This book then becomes a trial in error type thing. Jessica starts trying to find others like her, she tries to find more information about what happened to her and she tries to understand what it all means. With the help of Izzie she is able to figure a lot of things out, however it isn’t until she actually talks to Nancy that things become much more clearer.

If you like books that are passed on super human powers, want to learn a laid back interesting mystery or just wont a soft read, this book will probably be right up your alley. I enjoyed it and look forward to reading more by this author in the future.

I'm so pleased he finally published a book

I have been following Jack since he was simply posting photos on Flickr. Then followed on FB and finally purchased a lifetime membership on his website. I'm so pleased he finally published a book. I have been a fan of mourning photography for some time as someone from the South who comes from a long line of death traditions in my family (veiling mirrors, stopping clocks, photographing the deceased, etc.) I find his research and collecting quite interesting. This will go great with my 'Stiff' by Mary Roach, 'Smoke Gets in Your Eyes' by Caitlin Doughty, and ' Heavenly Bodies' by Paul Koudoumaris. All of which I also highly recommend if death is your cup of tea.

Too bad the printing quality is so bad

I collect books on post-mortem photography, so I was excited to find this book at such a fantastic price. However, it was a real disappointment. I'm not only a book collector but a print industry professional. Ghosting, hard-to-read type because it's screened back. Really coarse screens used, period. Awful. Printed in China. Really? There are tons of printers here. Who will actually give enough bleed so that white paper doesn't show on the bottom trimmed edges. And the photo reproduction is only okay.

My guess is that the poor print quality will effect the collectibility of this book in the future. Such a disappointment. As I told the publisher, I would have paid much more for a better-quality book printed in the US.

Lovely book - just hard to see.

I was so excited to finally get this book! I was tired of squinting at the computer screen and looked forward to looking at all the interesting details of the pictures.
The pictures are still detailed and interesting- but they are actually smaller then on the screen. MUCH smaller. It would have been SO much better if the pics were bigger- tho there are a very few page size. Also better if there were more contrast- they had lightened the pics and not made the background black so they kind of fade into them. The font size is somewhere around -6.
So muchly disappointment size wise but not content wise. The cover is lovely- the embossing and gold title are very nice. It is about 1/2 the size I expected all the way around- but it is still a neat book. Be warned- while you will enjoy the feel of it and the pics and info- you may well need a magnifier of some kind to truly see the details. I am not sure if I would have purchased it knowing how small everything is- but I will still enjoy it :)

ABOUT THE BOOK

Published in 1970, Islands in the Stream is the first of Ernest Hemingways posthumous novels. The novel was lightly edited by his widow, Mary Hemingway, and his publisher, Charles Scribner, Jr. Mary carefully points out in a note that opens the book, Beyond the routine chores of correcting spelling and punctuation, we made some cuts in the manuscript, feeling that Ernest would have surely made them himself.

Hemingway began work on this massive project in 1945. The pages he wrote from then until his death in 1961 became several different novels, some posthumous, some published before his death. All are loosely connected in that they were worked on concurrently, and at times, part of the same work.

Pieces were cut here and there to provide material for other books, and when finished, he produced enough text for four novels: Old Man, Islands, Across the River and into the Trees, and The Garden of Eden.

MEET THE AUTHOR

Ben Mitchell-Lewis is a resident of New Hampshire, but tries to spend as much time as possible traveling around New England, the country, and the world. He is a graduate of Colby College and is slowly cracking into the freelance writing game. Ben likes to get outside in any capacity (but especially to rock climb or ski), and travel/adventure writing is his favorite genre, though classic American novels are hard to beat.

EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK

The novels protagonist is Thomas Hudson, a world famous painter. As the book opens with Part I: Bimini, the reader is introduced to Hudson and his house set on a hill in Bimini, an island in the Bahamas. The house is as much a character as Hudson, and the whole of Part I revolves around the house, with brief interludes at bars, docks, and aboard a cabin cruiser equipped for lengthy days of fishing and exploring.

After an initial introduction to Hudson, the reader is familiarized with his habits, his daily life, his routines, and his staff, especially Eddy a constant companion, a good fisherman, and very attentive to Hudsons needsl. Hudson has several others always at hand to cook, clean, and mix drinks, the same people that accompany him fishing and help take care of his children. For Bimini is really about Hudsons relationship with his children the three boys, Tom, David, and Andrew, arrive in Bimini for a vacation with their father shortly after the books opening.

Before they arrive, Roger Davis is brought in. He is an old, dear friend of Hudsons, a fellow expatriate, and plays a pivotal role in the rest of Part I. While Hudson and Davis drink and carouse in the days before the boys visit, Roger gets into a heated fight with a wealthy man from New York on the docks. The events of that evening are quite trying for Davis and Hudson, and they retreat to the hilltop house to sleep it off and wait for the boys.

Basically a summary

Perhaps I was expecting something this book wasn't intended to be. I was hoping for background information and the inspiration for the stories and the characters. However, it's basically a chapter-by-chapter summary. If you were wanting to find stories quickly in the main book, this would be helpful. I don't see it as helpful otherwise.
