About the Author
Swami Satyananda Saraswati was born 1923 at Almora (Uttaranchal) into a family of farmers. His ancestors were warriors and many of his kith and kin down the line, including his father, served in the army and police force. However, it became evident that Swami Satyananda had a different bent of mind, as he began to have spiritual experiences at the age of six, when his awareness spontaneously left the body and he saw himself lying motionless on the floor. Many saints and sadhus blessed him and reassured his parents that he had a very developed awareness. This experience of disembodied awareness continued, which led him to many saints of that time such as Anandamayi Ma. Swami Satyanada also met a tantric bhairavi, Sukhman Giri, who gave him shaktipat and directed him to find a guru in order to stabilize his spiritual experiences. In 1944 at the age of nineteen, Swami Satyananda met his guru Swami Sivananda and came to live at Sivananda Ashram in Rishikesh. In 1947, he took the vow of sanyasin or monastic renunciation and became a swami. He served in different departments at the ashram for over 12 years. He did physical labor, edited the ashram's Hindi journal, wrote various articles and composed poems in both Hindi and Sanskrit. He wrote a translation and commentary in the English language of the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad by Swami Sivananda. Upon leaving the ashram in 1956, he wandered throughout India, Afghanistan, Nepal, Burma and Ceylon for the next 7 years, extending his knowledge of spiritual practices. He eventually found his way to Munger, in the province of Bihar. After establishing himself there, in 1963 he founded the International Yoga Fellowship and the Bihar School of Yoga a year later. He lectured and taught globally for the next twenty years and authored a number of books which are considered among the most revered in the field of yoga and yogic philosophy, and remain popular to this day. In 1988, he retired from active involvement in teaching and handed active work of his ashram and organization to his senior disciple Swami Niranjanananda. He lived in seclusion as a Paramahamsa Sannyasin performing higher spiritual and vedic sadhanas. Paramahamsa Swami Satyananda took "Sajeeva Samadhi" at his ashram in Rikhia, Jharkand on December 5th, 2009.

An incredibly clear and concise path to self-realization
By Dave Koo
There are a couple reviews here that do a great job of briefly explaining this book's amazing and unbelievably detailed contents so I won't head down that path. I will say that this is the path of yoga for the spiritually-inclined. Asanas are definitely part of the course, but in contrast to most other styles, a large amount of your time is spent in breath work and meditation which is not surprising given that Raja yoga (regarded as the most meditation-intensive supreme path of yoga) is a large part of Saytananda yoga. In fact, the more you progress, you realize that the asanas/postures are really just preparing you for meditation (kind of like stretching before running a marathon)

After practicing the first 7 lessons (7 months) of the book at home I decided to get serious about Satyananda Yoga and started looking for a teacher. As it turns out, there are only 4 fully accredited Satyananda teachers in North America (yes you read that correctly!) as it takes 3 to 5 years of intensive study to achieve that designation (as opposed to about 1 month to get a basic 200-hour yoga certificate elsewhere) and they have only started training Satyananda teachers in North America about 5 years ago. As all 4 of the teachers are in Cleveland Ohio, I took a flight out there to start my journey down this amazing path and hope to join the ranks of Satyananda teachers in a few years.

If you are a serious and disciplined aspirant and are interested in the practice of yoga for rapid spiritual evolution (as opposed to simply for health and fitness), then this is the path for YOU.

Hari Om Tat Sat,

Dave

Comprehensive textbook on kriya yoga
By H. Allami
This is a great book for people who are serious enough to start a daily yoga practice but for whom it is not feasible to go on an extended pilgrimage to an ashram or other yoga retreat. It does require a long-term commitment of regular practice and is not ideal for people who are absolute beginners or just dabbling.

The course within this book outlines the essentials of the entire yoga lifestyle and therefore includes information not only on yoga postures, but also on some of the esoteric practices including yogic breathing, cleansing, diet, philosophy, and chakra meditations. However, it is one specific system (or path) to yoga and should not be mixed with other systems i.e. if you choose this path, stick to this one alone.

Magnum Opus
By Karthik Mohan
I am a graduate student doing my Phd in Electrical Engineering but yoga and meditation are my hobbies (along with hiking and biking).
As some of the other reviewers have pointed out, this book is one of the most comprehensive, articulate and informative book I have found so far on meditation and yoga.
The book emphasizes that, 'There is no need to believe before hand that the techniques will work. Practice and you will know it to be true'.
The book starts with Hatha yoga, basic asanas and progresses through basic breathing techniques. Along the way it gives an in-depth analysis of various forms of yoga - Karma yoga, Raja Yoga, Bhakti yoga, etc.
It emphasizes that these different yogas complement each other and do not go against each other.
Some people might ask, well isn't there 'one god'. Shouldn't there be one path? This is a narrow way of looking at things. Sure there is one 'Mount Everest' but there are probably many different ways to get to the base-camp!
And each has its own scenic views and obstacles.
Same with the different yogas. Pick one that best suits your personality or better integrate a few of them - E.g. Karma yoga (This is easy to begin - If you work everyday!), Bhakti yoga (Prayer, devotion, etc) and Raja yoga (Breathing, Meditations, etc).
The book gives precise instructions especially in the breathing techniques and gives it to you in steps, so that you can measure your progress and move onto the next level.
The book moves onto advanced kriya techniques towards the end of the book (these require some level of mastery over postures and breathing techniques).
This is a book to keep for a lifetime and go through again and again to understand and integrate more knowledge as one progresses on the path.

Losing our religion
By technoguy
Watson has written a cornucopia of philosophical musings, taking in science, poetry, history, sociology, philosophy, literature, painting, religion. Changing the title from an earlier The Age of Atheism to The Age of Nothing, since we live in a post-Christian,post-secular,post-Modern age.Watson describes the response of modern Westernsocieties and their intellectuals to the decline of religion. The sweep is marvellous, from Gibbon and Hume, the French Revolution,Kant,Hegel, the Romantics, biblical criticism, Marx,Schopenhauer,Lyell,Darwin,we get `the melancholy, long, withdrawing roar'of the sea of faith.Nietzsche's concept of nihilism, that there exists no perspective external to or higher than life itself,no transcendence, nothing metaphysical, there are no `objective' value judgements:there are no facts,"no truths, only interpretations".Life itself has only the meaning we can give it.Nietzsche also saw science in comparative terms, the enlightenment desire to know everything was life-denying, the heir of Christian belief in rigour and honesty. The world is a chaos of multiple forces that cannot be reduced to unity. For Nietzsche only through the `will to power' can we gain control over inanimate nature. We must live in the present more intensely.Though Nietzsche wrote Thus Spake Zarathustra in the 1880s,its influence wasn't felt until after his death (1900).His became the most popular work of philosophy in Germany in the1st World War. The pursuit of disinterested truth had been the highest philosophic value prior to Nietzsche. Nietzsche's incoherence has led to his vast appeal to such a wide variety of people, he had a superb, aphoristic style, which often got lost in translation. He is at the heart of the university curriculum in the humanities.

With the death of God comes the loss of objectivity:all that remains is our own perspective, and we must make of it what we can.Watson's encyclopaedic knowledge is amazing as he moves on through the whole range of literature in French,German and English, taking in the post-Impressionist and modernist painters and discovering interesting and idiosyncratic reaction to the news of God's death. He concludes that there is only one stand-in for God and that is the intense moments of experience.According to him,the most important influence in shaping this search for the sacred moment was Husserl, the founding father of phenomenology, who held that experience is the reality against which theories are tested. This idea was given lierary form by Robert Musil, and philosophical form by Martin Heidegger. On the way he gives a lot of weight to the poetry of Rilke and Wallace Stevens.Walt Whitman said evolution `betrayed a want of living glow, fondness, warmth'. We've come up against our own loss of enchantment and technological limitations. Science has opened up a world of wonder, but also not provided any more answers on how we should live our lives. The sense of the sublime and the infinite that comes from mathematics, also makes us fall back in on ourselves, explore our own individualities, phenomenologically.

However, the God-hungry atheism of the mid-20th century has a slightly quaint air today. The life-cult of DH Lawrence, the socialist progressivism of HG Wells, the nave optimism of John Dewey, the existentialist nihilism of Heidegger and Sartre-all such religious substitutes have lost their appeal, and we're left with an encounter between evangelical atheists, who tell us that religious belief is nonsensical and wicked, and defenders of intelligent design who look around for the scraps that the Almighty has left behind.A Theory of Everything will not solve our modern dilemma.Freud's import has been immense with his psychologising of the theological instinct. In the new wasteland where were values going to come from? They can only come from basic appetites and instincts, which has led to the perversions of Nazism amongst other things. We've also seen the rise and fall of Communism and Maoism,as post-Christian atheistic beliefs.A return to God has come through a form of religious atheism. The idea for our survival is through love and relationships, forms of moral behaviour, as EO Wilson says, empirically grounded in our evolutionary history, linking the sciences and the arts and the humanities through `consilience'. Humility in ethics, adaptation to the cosmos, and all of the life on the planet.I think a really important part of the book is how he covers the philosophy of politics, the democratic elements of a secular societythrough thinkers like Nozik,Dewey,Rorty,Dworkin and Habermas. This covers a real need in a world grown dangerous through the extremism of politicised religion in the fundamentalist Christian and Islamic worlds. Also the alliance between the White House and the state of Israel only exacerbates the problem of disbelief having real dignity.

A Fascinating View
By Dr. Peter Davies
I enjoyed this book. It is a superb summary of 20th century thought about God and godlessness, and the implications this holds for our view of ourselves, and how our behaviour can be grounded if there is no god to ground them in.

It shows how many people, across the world, and in many different fields- art, novels, philosophy, religion, theology, architecture, came to respond to Nietzsche's bold declaration that "God is dead, and we have killed him." It is a tremendous synthesis of many themes and currents of thinking, many of which are still active today.

It explains well the consequences of the death of "grand narratives" (although this view is itself something of a grand narrative...) and how people have learned to become more proximate and limited in their thinking. There's something to be said for this- it's an Aristotelian pragmatism- some reasonably justifiable action needs to be made now- as opposed to the often rather idealised Platonic forms of abstract ideas such as Justice, Health, Morality etc. Such ideas are fascinating, but get more elusive the more you try to define them completely and competently. God can be seen as the biggest Platonic form of them all- and in the twentieth century such large ideas came to be seen as untrustworthy, and indefinable. The logical positivists in Austria went as far as to say nothing meaningful could be said about God.

This book explains a lot about our current age and how we have arrived at where we are. It's a great book for history, and reflection, and also recognition of current limits to our thoughts and ideas.

It shows clearly that where we are now is not a complete intellectual ending, but this book is a good review of progress to date. It's written fairly and accurately, and without imposing any one viewpoint on the ideas it discusses. It's more like a map of relationships between ideas than an argument towards a particular outcome. It's a better book for using this writing strategy.

This book can be recommended to all those of us- whether theistic or atheistic- who want to understand where our current ideas have come from, and are willing to reflect on why we choose the particular ones we hold.

A beautiful tribute to the creativity, ingenuity and diversity of the human spirit
By Lachlan Dale
Humans have been attempting to orientate themselves in the universe for millennia. Once our physical needs of food, water and shelter are met, we tend to pursue the higher goal of living a good or meaningful life. Some try to master this art of living intuitively, but others seek to formalise and classify experience to bring their lives under the service of some theoretical value.

This is the purpose of philosophy: to study existence in order to better know ourselves, and to determine what is meaningful or worth pursuing.

Whether or not you believe Objective Truth is accessible to humans is almost incidental, for, even shorn of its lofty goals, the act of philosophic self-examination provides a way for humans to slowly mould and direct the way they live their lives. The practice of philosophy is the cultivation of consciousness; a method by which we can ‘self-create’ and imagine new forms and ways of being in the world.

The Age of Nothing: How We've Sought To Live Since The Death of God by Peter Watson

This passion for philosophy is what brought me to Peter Watson’s heavy, grey tome, The Age Of Nothing: How We Have Sought To Live Since The Death Of God – a book which attempts to chronicle the incredible varieties in ways in which humans (predominantly Westerners) have approached the question of life in a post-religious context.

That might sound a little dry, but what makes The Age of Nothing so engaging is that it doesn’t limit itself to discussion of academic philosophy. Watson analyses dancers, painters, and musicians; political movements, New Age spiritualists, and scientists; psychologists, poets and playwrights, in addition to the ideas of some of the greatest philosophers from the last century. This is wholly appropriate, for the art of living is not merely a question of constructing theories about living, but about action and dynamic engagement with the universe.

The book’s starting point is Nietzsche’s proclamation of the death of God, as published in 1882’s The Parable of the Madman:

"The madman jumped into their midst and pierced them with his eyes. “Whither is God?” he cried; “I will tell you. We have killed him – you and I. All of us are his murderers. But how did we do this? How could we drink up the sea? Who gave us the sponge to wipe away the entire horizon? What were we doing when we unchained this earth from its sun? Whither is it moving now? Whither are we moving? Away from all suns? Are we not plunging continually? Backward, sideward, forward, in all directions? Is there still any up or down? Are we not straying, as through an infinite nothing? Do we not feel the breath of empty space? Has it not become colder? Is not night continually closing in on us? Do we not need to light lanterns in the morning? Do we hear nothing as yet of the noise of the gravediggers who are burying God? Do we smell nothing as yet of the divine decomposition? Gods, too, decompose. God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him."

“How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers? What was holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet owned has bled to death under our knives: who will wipe this blood off us? What water is there for us to clean ourselves? What festivals of atonement, what sacred games shall we have to invent? Is not the greatness of this deed too great for us? Must we ourselves not become gods simply to appear worthy of it? There has never been a greater deed; and whoever is born after us – for the sake of this deed he will belong to a higher history than all history hitherto.”

The parable is a concise expression of the existential crisis Nietzsche saw threatening mankind. In a Christian world all value comes from God; an entity who has pre-ordained an order of what is good and bad, right and wrong. When that paternalistic overseer is removed from the equation, the universe – and all human striving – loses all meaning.

Fearing civilisation’s potential collapse into debilitating nihilism, Nietzsche attempted to forge a new system of post-religious meaning that would allow humanity to continue to build, dream and survive. Innumerable people followed Nietzsche in this goal, and the diversity of ways in which they did so is mesmerising.

Watson chronicles the diverse movements which sprung up on the wake of Nietzsche, including the development of Impressionism, Dadaism, and Surrealism; Phenomenology and Existentialism; the Dionysian body-affirmation of modern dance; the changing role of poetry; the rise of nationalism as a substitute for religion; the philosophy of jazz and bebop; the disaster of the Russian Revolution; the theological core of National Socialism; and the incredible impact the development of psychology had on philosophy and religion.

His tome also acts as a brilliant primer to the artistic, philosophical and cultural developments of the 20th Century, introducing readers with figures such as Richard Dworkin, William James, Freud, George Santayana, E. O. Wilson, Lenin, Van Gogh, Heidegger, Kafka, Dali, Rilke, Beckett – the list could go on.

While many people fear the idea of a world without God, I couldn’t help but feel uplifted by humanity’s immense potential after reading The Age of Nothing.

In the past few centuries we’ve begun to suspect there is no mythical entity to absolve us of the incredible responsibility we have over our actions. As Nietzsche anticipated, the rules we once imagined have disintegrated in our hands, leaving us to directly confront the incredible chaos and complexity of the universe.

As a result, we’ve slowly awakened as self-creators of meaning. At times this terrifying freedom has caused us to surge desperately towards man-made systems that promise to resolve life’s ambiguity. Some of these systems have caused immeasurable suffering – as with the horrors of the Red Terror and Auschwitz, or even the egoist absurdity of Scientology – but we have also created beautiful, new constellations of the mind.

Peter Watson’s The Age Of Nothing is a beautiful tribute to the creativity, ingenuity and diversity of the human spirit. At 600 pages – and with language that can at times be quite technical – it is certainly no easy read, but those who take the time will arm themselves with powerful tools to help attain peace and purpose in life.

Introduction to International Development: Approaches, Actors, and Issues, by Paul Haslam, Jessica Schafer, Pierre Beaudet

Introduction to International Development is a topical and theoretical introduction to development studies. This book is unique in its multidisciplinary approach given that most textbooks in the area are anchored primarily in one specific discipline-such as political science or economics-and fail to incorporate theories and viewpoints from other disciplines. Drawing contributors from a variety of disciplines-all three editors themselves come from different disciplinary backgrounds-this text ensures that students are exposed to a well-rounded view of development issues. In addition to being interdisciplinary, the book is international in scope - contributors from North America, the UK, Europe and the developing world expose students to diverse international perspectives. The book is divided into three sections: an overview of the history and key theories, a presentation of the key actors, and an exploration of contemporary issues in international development. Combining theoretical, practical, and multidisciplinary approaches to respond to the particular needs of undergraduate international development programs, Introduction to International Development is truly the ideal text for any international development studies course!

Informative and interesting
By lc
Very informative and interesting. I used this for an international policy of social welfare course in grad school. It was a great read and had lots of information packed into it. The way the information is presented is a bit story-like, which made it easier for me to remember. (And for those who just need straight up definitions and concepts, it has an index/glossary, obviously.) Great stuff.

A quick taste of the Docker’s basics without a word about its internals
By Jascha Casadio
At the beginning of November 2015, Docker 1.9 was released and with it multi-host networking was introduced. At the same time, Swarm finally reached a stable state that guaranteed it the label of production-ready. The DockerCon that took place in Barcelona was a success, confirming 2015 has been a great year for that blue whale. The strong impact containers had on the IT world is reflected on the one hand by the many companies investing on it, and on the other by the humongous amount of blog posts and books dedicated to it. In a scenario where some must-have title has already been released (see the bottom for suggested titles), Learning Docker places itself as an introductory text that targets professionals and enthusiasts interested in getting a quick taste of this new technology.

Docker is one of those technologies that I am particularly interested in. I have been reading a lot about it, from the official documentation up to blogs, passing through that horde of books that made it up to the Amazon’s shelves. Getting through these 200 pages took me less than two days, mainly because none of the topics covered was new to me. But let’s dive into it!

The very first thing that I have noticed about this title is the complete lack of background about what Docker is and, mainly, how it works under the hood. I did not find a single paragraph describing what a union mount is. Union mounts are one of the many key concepts of Docker that are not explained at all. Another concept that is not explained at all is, for example, that of the build context. Mind, the term build context appears all over the book, but the reader is not told what it is. The examples that show how to build an image use it without making it clear that the build context is that lone dot at the very end of the command. Concepts such as name spaces and cgroups are, instead, briefly described at the very end of the book, in the chapter dedicated to security.

Another thing I did not appreciate much is the quality of the diagrams used to present the concepts being explained. They are colorful yes, but they could have been definitely better. But diagrams apart, do we really need screenshots to guide us through the signup form of the Docker Hub?

The examples presented by the authors are very simple. Throughout the book there is not a single real-world example, nothing that gets beyond the containers’ equivalent of an Hello World! in C. Still, this is a very beginners’ book. This also means that topics such as Kubernetes or Mesos are not touched at all.

Tying it all up, a very beginners’ book that I did not like but that someone completely new to the subject could find easy to read to get started. Still, the book can’t keep up with the competition: beginners should prefer passing through each and every page of the official documentation and, optionally, Turnbull’s The Docker Book.

Suggested readings:

The Docker Book: an user friendly, concise introduction to Docker. While it does not cover many advanced topics, it’s by far the best covering the basics.
Docker Hands on: while not helpful to beginners, it offers the reader many advanced topics that can’t be found anywhere else.
Docker: Up and Running: a very good text that focuses on advanced topics, mainly containers security.

As usual, you can find more reviews on my personal blog: http://books.lostinmalloc.com. Feel free to pass by and share your thoughts!

an interesting book for container enthusiasts
By Venkatesh Bhat
This is a great reference book for cloud developers, from novice to expert. It covers nearly all features with docker container, followed by a hands-on example.
It effectively demonstrates the advantages of running multiple containers within a virtual machine instead of spinning up a virtual machine for every application.
The book is well written in simple terms and could be easily used for preparing presentation about docker features.
Most recommended for container enthusiasts.

A comprehensive and easy way to master Docker technology in a very short time
By Carles
Either if you are a Developer or a System Administrator, Docker is about to be a must know and must have in your daily toolbox.
When a new technology arises and you want to get savvy on it, you can choose between two roads: diving into hundreds of not so well documented and often outdated on-line tutorials or going for the right way and choose a good book like this that guides and helps you in the process. This book it's written with this kind of scenario in mind, going straight to the point that matters, in order to help and speed up your learning curve.

On chapter 1 you'll learn what it's docker and how can you benefit from using it on your daily work. If you are a developer who wants to start using this technology the book guides you through a series of chapters that discuses all you need to know to get confident with it (chapters 1 to 4). In the other hand if you are a system administrator, once you know the basis from the 4th first chapters, you only need to keep walking your way across the chapter 5 to get all you need to know to deploy and maintain you own private Docker infrastructure.
From that point both developers and System Administrators still have chapters 6 to 11 to get deeper knowledge of more areas of expertise regarding Docker ecosystem.

Summarizing, if you buy this book you'll get a very comprehensive and easy way to master Docker technology in a very short time.

He puffs out his chest, stands up tall, and roars, "Quiet!" After the baby falls asleep, he warns the jungle animals, "If any of you makes a noise, and wakes up Leo, I will gobble you up." At first, all of the creatures are silent, but then two parrots caw and squeak, a hyena chuckles and chortles, some monkeys screech and chatter, and a hippo splashes and squelches. However, none of these outbursts is loud enough to disturb the baby, and the disappointed lion finds himself growing very hungry. When Papa's stomach begins to rumble and growl, "Loud as a banging drum," Leo wakes up crying, and the king of the jungle faces his angry wife and sheepishly takes responsibility. The text is simple and descriptive and the use of repetition and rhythmic language make the story perfect for sharing aloud. The colorful cartoon artwork is packed with humorous details. Papa's facial expressions, which range from pompous to grumpy to embarrassed, are a hoot. An energetic, lighthearted tale that will have children roaring with laughter.
