Use the whole book!

Different views will make sense for different muscles when you look at your actual cat. The real thing won't always be picture perfect, your cat and your dissection skills will determine how each view looks. Look at all of the views before you label a muscle. The veins and arteries and vessels should match on every view though.

Pictorial Anatomy Of The Cat

I am a graduate teaching assistant at Old Dominion University and we use this book extensively as a reference for muscles and blood vessels. The drawings are very accurate and the text is easy to read and flows well from a dissector's viewpoint. In addition, there are simplified "road-map" type sketches to aid in understanding the branching patterns of the major blood vessels. This "catlas" has proven to be quite indispensable for our purposes.

Classic dissection guide

This lab dissection guide was written over 40 years ago, but it is still the single best guide to cat anatomy. Cats haven't changed, but modern textbook manufacturers think that their thick glossy expensive books are more appealing to today's students. They are wrong. This simple guide is filled with beautiful hand drawn illustrations that are more helpful than any photograph. I only wish it was spiral bound so I could leave it open flat while dissecting. Check out Gilbert's guide to the dogfish anatomy as well. Together they make a great set of manuals for any comparative anatomy course.

Outstanding

I've been fascinated by fluvial geomorphology for more than two decades, and the topic has routinely been a part of my professional engineering practice. I thought it would be nice to do a comprehensive review of the latest textbook-level thinking on the topic, and I found this book by Ro Charlton to be ideal for that purpose. More specifically, the book is well organized, the writing is clear, the graphics are ample and effective, and the level of detail is "just right" (sufficient for everyone other than specialists, hence the "fundamentals" title). In other words, I learned from this book, and I also enjoyed the learning process.

Unfortunately, the book does reinforce my impression that fluvial geomorphology is still at a relatively immature stage which is mostly just descriptive, with few practically useful predictive models to be found, and with models being more qualitative than quantitative. Of course, this is a consequence of the inherent complexity of streams, not a fault of the book (which is only telling it like it is).

The bottom line is that I recommend this book to anyone seeking an overview of the fundamentals of fluvial geomorphology. I know of no better book for that purpose, and I've looked around fairly diligently.

If you are interested in a book on fluvial geomorphology, and who isn't, then this is a great book. Concepts are explained well and there are some great pictures in it. I really enjoyed this book and I had a great professor at UGA, so 5 starts for the book and geomorphology.

"Local government in colonial America was the seedbed of American constitutionalism." So begins the introductory essay to this landmark collection of eighty documents created by the American colonists—and not English officials—that are the genesis of American fundamental law and constitutionalism. Most of these documents, commencing with the Agreement of the Settlers at Exeter in New Hampshire, July 5, 1639, and concluding with Joseph Galloway's Plan of Union, 1774—"the immediate precursor to the Articles of Confederation"—have never before been accessible to the general reader or available in a single volume. As Professor Lutz points out, the documents are chosen to make possible "a careful examination of [the American] people's attempt at self-interpretation." All of the principal colonial documents are included, as are all documents attempting to unite the colonies, beginning with the New England Confederation of 1643. Bicameralism, popular sovereignty, the separation of powers, checks and balances, limited government, and religious freedom—in sum, the hallmarks of American constitutionalism—were first presented to the world in these writings.

Donald S. Lutz is a professor of political philosophy in the department of political science at the University of Houston, where he has been teaching since 1968. He received his Ph.D. from Indiana University. He is the author of eleven books, including Colonial Origins of the American Constitution: A Documentary History (1998), A Preface to American Political Theory, (1992), and The Origins of American Constitutionalism (1988), and numerous articles published in American Political Science Review, the American Journal of Political Science, the Journal of Politics, Publius: The Journal of Politics, Social Science Quarterly, the Annals of Political Science and History, and Western Political Quarterly, among others.

Though challenging at times to read - both because ot the period spelling and sometimes complex prose - I give this book a thumbs up for any history buff wanting to understand America in the era leading up to the revolution and establishment of the constitution.

Realize this is a compendium of documents and thus don't expect much narrative. There is some in the form of introductions to each article as well as a detailed preface-introduction; you will need to draw more from study ( and discussion if you can read with others) but nothing worthwhile is all that easy!

A Top Notch Collection Of Colonial Sources

Professor Donald S. Lutz has given us a fine contribution of historical documents from colonial America (1607-1776) with his ~Colonial Origins of the American Constitution: A Documentary History~. These documents trace the foundations of American Constitutionalism from the beginnings of the American colonies to the start of the revolutionary perion 1776.

American Constitutionalism, according to Lutz, developed out of two distinct traditions that would combine to create a uniquely American Constitutional tradition. The first developing from the top-down structure from England consisting of "charters, letters-patent," and other orders written by the English for the colonists. The second tradition, and the focus of this collection was the set of rules; covenants, compacts, ordinances, codes, etc. written by the colonists themselves that helped spur the movement towards the development of American Constitutionalism. This second tradition and its development did not originate in the outgrowth of 1776 revolution, but was a constant evolution spanning over a hundred years (1607-1776) and Lutz proved this to be the case in the documents provided (only a small sampling, but according to Lutz valuable collection).

As another reviewer indicated, the introductory essay by Lutz is a "valuable piece of work" in of itself. There is a good amount of information about the use of language contained in the essay provided by Lutz. He does a good job at explaining/defining various terms like; covenant, compact, constitution, charter, etc. and how those words were used and sometimes interchangeable. The way Lutz analyzed the language during the period in his essay is essential for anyone to understand in context the subsequent documents and I can't place more emphasis on reading/understanding his introductory essay for those who are not familiar with the period and the language used.

Overall, this is an exceptional and well organized collection (state by state ending with confederations) of important documents regarding the colonial origins of American Constitutionalism. The book ends with a fine bibliography for those who want to further explore more documents of our colonial past and its influence on American Constitutionalism. As another reviewer stated the only downside is a lack of an index, but still an excellent source.

Critical documentary and analytical source

The American Constitution did not spring fully formed, Athena-like, from James Madison's fevered brow. It was the product of many men's ideas and experiences. It was also a link in a long chain of efforts by the political communities of North America to put down on parchment the proper relationship between government and citizen. In showing (to change the metaphor) the family tree of the U.S. Constitution, this book is an invaluable documentary resource for anyone attempting to understand the origins and meaning of our system's central document.
From the 'Articles, Laws, and Orders, Divine, Politic, and Martial for the Colony in Virginia' (1610) and the Mayflower Compact (1620), through to the Articles of Confederation (1777), Donald Lutz has assembled an impressive documentary history. But his intention isn't simply to catalogue old contracts. As he notes in his Preface, Lutz's goal is to show how the early Americans thought of themselves, how they began to knit themselves together as a people, and how certain critical concepts -- popular sovereignty, rule of law, a virtuous society -- were adopted as 'symbols' of an emerging American consciousness. In this regard, the 'Introductory Essay' is itself a valuable piece of work.
Both as an analysis and a collection of primary documents, this book deserves to be near at hand to any student of American constitutional history and practice.

About the Author
Steven R. Pliszka, MD, is Dielmann Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where he served as Chief of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry from 1995-2015. Throughout his career, Dr. Pliszka has been involved in a wide range of administrative, research, clinical, and educational activities. His research focuses on attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and related disorders; he has been involved with numerous clinical trials of medications for ADHD and currently uses functional magnetic imaging to try to understand the mechanisms of action of ADHD treatments. He has also been involved in several projects to integrate mental health services into pediatric primary care. Dr. Pliszka maintains an active clinical practice and serves as the attending psychiatrist for two residential facilities for children with severe behavioral and emotional disorders.

I got this book at a recommendation of a friend. Initillay going through the first few chapter I was impressed, specially with the chapter draw the brain but later the book becomes very dry and it's too much information, not sure whether that's required or not. I am a first year resident still have not finished the book but I was hoping for a simpler and to the point book. It would interesting to know other people's reviews

Jackson is the head coach of the NBA's Chicago Bulls. The team won three successive championships with Jackson in charge. A fellow named Michael Jordan was on those teams, so there are those who dismiss Jackson's coaching ability in favor of an "anybody could win with Michael" theory. They're wrong. Jackson is an excellent tactician and a shrewd motivator who contributes greatly to the Bulls' success. Here he puts forth his coaching philosophies, an eclectic mix of hoop sense, Zen, Native American wisdom, and Western philosophy. His earliest challenge was to maximize Jordan's skills by convincing him to believe in his teammates' abilities. He met it with an assist from the philosophy of a Middle Eastern guru. Jackson has always had a reputation for being a little off center, and this book will provide fuel for his critics. His genius isn't for devising strategy but for inducing wealthy, pampered, often petulant young men to pull together spiritually to attain a common goal. Whole School Read

This is a fabulous book. Our school is basketball crazy the way Texas schools adhere to football. We chose it for a "whole school read" and have kids reading willingly who would never have tackled a book except under dire duress. We have discussions about leadership, community, "we or me." There are quote walls in several rooms as kids are picking out inspirational sentences. The religious aspects, while pervasive, are such that students seem to be able to take what they want and leave the rest. Only a few have expressed discomfort with the spiritual talk in the book - and those are largely kids who are struggling with those very questions themselves. While I had geared myself for objections about the religious content, I had not expected language to be an issue. Be aware that there are a few (very few) "F-Bombs" in the book. This marks the difference between whether an adult is reading it or someone actively looking for "school appropriate language." Many of us had not noticed this language and many of the students had not noticed; we are that inured to profane language. But we can't require students to read a book that contains language they would be bounced for using in the halls. This is where "Sacred Hoops" lost that final star.

Great insight to a great coach and team

I have read this book twice since buying it a short time ago. It's quite readable and entertaining, not to say insightful.

This is a book written in Phil's voice and reads something like a diary he would have kept. It gives some good biographical information on Phil, his years in school, as a player for the NY Knicks, as a beginning coach and how he came to combine his spiritual searches with basketball playing and coaching. Most of the examples given and stories told pertain to Phils years as head coach of the Chicago Bulls. There are a number of references to books on Zen and Indian spirituality that have influenced his thinking

The only critique I would have is that the book's sense of time is rather fragmented and does not progress in a strictly linear fashion. There are references to events that occurred earlier and those to come later. So, I had to construct my own timeline to track the strict evolution of events--a minor chore--but it would have been helpful if the book had supplied this.

Is this book a slam-dunk? It could be. I'm having a hard time rating this book 4 stars when it should have had 4.5 stars. This book could be rated more like Scottie Pippen than Michael Jordan to keep up with this book's terms.

The story about Phil Jackson and the Chicago Bulls is amazing. Any story written about it has the potential to reach Jordan heights. The story described by Phil Jackson makes it even more compelling.

Getting to know the insights about Jackson's training also gives insight about the man and his beliefs as Zen is unmistakenly connected to him. This is the only flaw within the book. Although he used it on his pupils and it worked on them, it does not always guarantee succes outside sports. Business is a different league.

If you're a sports lover just grab a copy of the book and read it. If you like to step up your own game DO try this at home, although success cannot be guaranteed.
