This was my English textbook as a High School senior in Cuba, back in 1955. It was out of print by that time, but the nun who was teaching us was ADAMANT and refused to use any other. So she had us get copies from older students.
It is old fashioned, and young people today will probably find it dull. But English is still English, and good writing remains a goal to be attained deliberately and systematically. I learned a lot from it, and still enjoy perusing it.

Reliability at Its Best

Author Joe W. McPherson received his Ph. D. degree in physics from Florida State University; and he has been with Texas Instruments since 1980. He is now Texas Instruments Senior Fellow Emeritus. He has 150 publications in the field of semiconductor reliability. He applies science to reliability problems to solve them.

Throughout the book, the author tries to give examples for reliability issues for pipes, tires, turbine blades, but without question, the primary thrust of the book is semiconductor reliability. The chapters deal with device degradation and fitting degradation data; statistics (Normal, Lognormal and Weibull distribution); failure rate; accelerated degradation and modeling, ramp to failure test, and TTF models for semiconductor circuits (this being the condensed version of Dr. McPherson's work), mechanical reliability issues and conversion of dynamic stress into static equivalent.

There are plenty of examples (with realistic experimental data) in each chapter to illustrate how to fit data, how to construct the statistics and calculate statistical variables; how to accelerate degradation and to project to use conditions for exponential and power law models; analytical formulas for ramp testing establishing effective time at fail stress level for exponential and power law models. TTF models for semiconductor circuits chapter include electron and stress migration and their relation to grain boundaries and conductor geometries; corrosion and exponential corrosion model with RH%; thermal cycling and associated crack propagation - plastic deformation and corresponding Cofin-Manson model; Time-Dependent Dielectric Breakdown (TDDB) - E, 1/E and 1/SQRT(E) models are discussed and compared for lifetime projections; Mobile Surface Inversion, Hot Carrier Injection and Negative Bias Instability are also discussed. Mechanical reliability issues - most with semiconductor reliability issues in mind - are discussed in a separate chapter: bonds and Mie-Gruneisen potential, ionic bonds, elastic and inelastic behavior of metals, grain boundaries, fracture strength, creep and fatigue.

The book has a laser focus and clarity and does not degenerate into abstract academic discussions other than what is necessary for understanding issues at hand. The reader can follow up with the references and McPherson's publications - which have the same clarity and notation system that the book does. I highly recommend the book especially for those with a generic engineering background who deal with reliability - for them the book is going to be an eye opener.

The second edition has great color illustrations

The second edition has great color illustrations. This is a no-nonsense presentation of Reliabilty Physiscs, Statistical Distributions, etc. I would only wish for a more in-depth analysis of how to use Weibull or Log-normal distributions to for area scaling, and detailed comparisons of different wear-out distributions. It is an excellent text.

This is an excellent Reliability Student's textbook with plenty of examples throughput the book and problems with answers at the end of each chapter. It is also an excellent reference book for the Reliability Professional with all the necessary equations, explanations, failure mechanisms and citations. I will be constantly referring to this book in my daily work as a Reliability Engineer.

A lesson for all ages

This little book teaches
It's really okay
To temper your temper
And just walk away

Ideal for young children
Who're now starting school
To show them that tantrums
Are truly un-cool

The fifth book in the series has the universal theme of anger, and some simple ways you can deal with that tight feeling in your gut before the situation gets out of hand. As usual, the catchy illustrations and simple language make the subject matter easy for young children to identify with, but this time, we can all learn something from Howard.

The world would be better
If feuding leaders
Would put down their weapons
And be "Howard" readers

As the school year progresses and new friendships are formed between students something else starts to form....conflicts. And they don't always end nicely. Anger can really mess the whole thing up. So as an elementary school counselor this is the time of year I start teaching A LOT of lessons on how to deal with your anger without hurting other kids. Howard B Wigglebottom Learns It's OK to Back Away is new to my shelf and fits in beautifully with my lessons on learning to get calm and walk away from situations. It's also a good way to demonstrate self-talk. Howard uses the phrase, "Stop, it's OK to back away." Really like that....calming statements work wonders!

Learning to manage anger at a young age

"It's OK to Back Away" is another little gem in the Howard B. Wigglebottom series to help young children navigate through the formative age experienced by 4 to 8 year olds, and gives kids practical ways to manage the anger they feel when they aren't getting their way. Young children can often have a self-centered nature, especially if they are the center of a family's attention. Conversely, they can feel they need certain attention if they are not getting enough and act out because of it. In this book, Howard the rabbit's young friend Ali (the alligator) shows Howard how to defuse his own anger, and gently lets him know he isn't a loser if he doesn't always get what he wants when he wants it. The lessons in this book can be a good reminder for adults as well in a stressful world. As always, the illustrations are rich and captivating, and almost always contain more funny little nuances noticed when reading the book a second and third time, which children will want to do.

Adler's third novel ( Leonie ; Peach ), has the makings of a run-of-the-mill sex-and-Gucci jet-set frolic that condescends slightly to its readers (doesn't everyone know Geneva is in Switzerland?). Yet it rises above the genre to surprise, fascinate and eventually elicit a smile at its resolution. Mike Preston, an investigative journalist looking for a new subject, spots an ad in the L.A . Times seeking the heiress to the estate of Poppy Mallory (born in Santa Barbara, died in Italy). When he contacts the Swiss lawyer who placed the ad, advocate Lieber tells him that Poppy's estate is worth hundreds of millions, and agrees that if Mike finds the heiress, he can write a book about Poppy. The novel continues on two time lines. In the present, the various claimants, all somehow (but how?) linked with Poppy, gradually become aware of each other. Alternately, we learn that Poppy was seduced and abused, ran the most exclusive brothel in Paris, fell in love with a powerful Italian gangster, lost her son's love, died slightly gaga, very rich and utterly alone. But all is not cliche; here are scarlet herrings (men and women), genuine pathos, humor and inventiveness, and the rich actually reap the whirlwind while the riches are inherited by the meek and deserving. Tangled Web of Family History and Scandal Is Thrilling Read

This is the unforgettable and totally captivating story of Poppy Mallory. From Poppy's tragic youth spent with a n'er-do-well gambling addict who allowed her to be raised by ladies of the evening and orphanages, to her rise as a notorious woman of France, I was totally engrossed in finding out what would happen next. A life punctuated by lost love and the great sadness of giving birth to two children she could never fully know, make this one of the best novels I've read this year.
When investigative journalist Mike Preston is commissioned to find the missing heir/heiress to Poppy Mallory's fortune, he uncovers an incredibly tangled family tree and uproots all its darkest secrets. From California to Venice to Paris and around the globe, this fascinating story unfolds with a richly-textured plot and distinctive characters.
From the very beginning, when Poppy's father Jeb Mallory concocts a plan with immigrant Nikolas Konstant, the story leads readers on a magical mystery of scandals, lies, and deception. Who will emerge as the true heir becomes almost second in importance to the interesting lives Poppy, her friends, and descendents live. Her childhood friends Angel and Greg Konstant, her first love Felipe and her unforgettable lover Franco as well as all the offspring of these characters are woven into a remarkable tale that you won't want to put down. This book is ingenious, well-plotted, and totally intriguing. I look forward to reading more by this author.

This was the first Elizabeth Adler book I read all the way through (I didn't enjoy her first two novels Peach/Private Desires) I have read TRSI about 4 times over a period of five years, and I still enjoy hearing the story of Poppy Mallory and her descendants. Even thought I have enjoyed all her other books I still rate this as the best

A Must-Read Book

This is an excellent book to read. It was like I was reading my life story that was written by someone else. I thought that my situation was a unique one, but I was surprised to learn that there are many, many women out there who are experiencing the same emotional abuse that I have been through. A person can be charged by the police with physical abuse because the physical marks are left on the outer body. When it comes to emotional abuse, these marks are all psychological and the police will not bring charges on anyone for emotional abuse. Emotional abuse should be taken as seriously as physical abuse. As with physical abuse, the scars of emotional abuse are left with you for your lifetime. We need to change the law and have these emotional abusers also brought up on charges.

Potentially an amazing book, but with some serious flaws that need fixing

Despite the three stars, I have to start off by saying that this book got me very excited, and has the makings of a five star book. However, I think it has a couple of major issues that would need fixing before I could really recommend it. Depending on your background, these issues may not be a problem for you, in which case you would love it. Please read my review carefully before commenting or rating it, as my reasons for feeling it wasn't as good as it could be may not apply to you. That doesn't make my review unhelpful, it just means that it may not apply to you.

Let me begin by pointing out that my day job consists of pulling data from a database, displaying it on a window, waiting for the user to do something with it and then saving it back to the database. Probably sounds boringly familiar to a lot of us. If so, you need to read this book to realise that some people have fun in their jobs! I read this book thinking, "Why aren't I doing exciting stuff like this?"

So why only three stars, let me explain. The blurb for the book includes the following (incorrect) statement... "If you’re new to F#, this book will give you everything you need to get started." This was one of the reasons I bought it. I have looked at F# before, but never really got to grips with it. This promised to teach it to me, whilst explaining Machine Learning (ML) at the same time. Sadly, the author failed fairly badly at this, which is a shame, as it wouldn't have taken much to include a bit more explanation that would have made the F# code much easier to understand.

As I read the first chapter, I was really excited. It was well explained, and opened my eyes to a whole new world of code that I had never seen. He started off with some code in C#, which was great as it was familiar, then showed the same code in F#, and explained how it worked. At this point, I was ready to give the book a five star review, and rave about how wonderful it was.

As I read the second chapter, I began to have my doubts, as he threw new F# syntax and constructs in, but didn't explain what most of it was, leaving me confused as to what the code was supposed to be doing. This got worse as the book went on, to the point where I started skim-reading the F#, totally defeating the purpose of the book. Sure I could copy and paste his code, but that wouldn't help me understand ML. I want to know what he's doing and why, so I can then write my own code to suit my own situation. Without sufficient explanation of the F#, this was extremely difficult.

He also didn't really explain why F# was any better for this than C#. Other than the type providers, which is a brilliant F# feature, I wouldn't see any reason why I wouldn't do exactly the same in C#. I'm sure F# has many reasons for being more suitable, but this book didn't explain them.

The annoying thing is that the book is pretty slim (less than 300 pages), and it wouldn't have been a problem to add more explanation of the F#. The book could still have been a modest size, but would have been sooooooo much better. Given the high cost of the book for the number of pages, it's actually a bit cheeky that the explanations are so slim.

Now obviously, if you already have a good background in F#, then the comments above won't apply to you, but the book is sold on the promise of teaching you F# as it goes along, and (in my opinion) it fails to do that.

The other major issue with the book is the maths. I was please to discover that ML uses some quite interesting maths, but very frustrated that he didn't explain most of this. Sure you can go off and search around for explanations of the concepts and what they mean, but I don't need to buy a book for that.

Now before anyone jumps in and points out that this isn't a maths book, and it would take too much to explain it all, you're right, but SOME explanation would have made a huge difference. For example, it's pretty easy to look up the definition of eigenvectors and eigenvalues, and find out how to compute them, but I want to know WHY they are useful here, and what they mean. Again, using this sort of thing blindly, without any understanding of what it means is not going to make me an expert in ML. I want to be able to do this stuff on my own, not just copy his code and use it without understanding it.

Again, this issue may not be a problem for you if you are well versed in Bayesian statistics, liner algebra, entropy and various other non-trivial subjects, but as the majority of us are probably not knowledgeable in these areas, we need more explanation to make this book as amazing as it obviously could be.

I feel bad giving the book only three stars, especially as I can't put it down, but I feel it really needs major work before it can be recommended whole heartedly. I hope the author takes these comments in the spirit they were intended, and fleshes out the book for the second edition. If so, this would be a truly brilliant book.

In summary, this book could be a classic. As it is, it's compelling reading, but left me without any confidence that I would apply much of what was presented on my own.

Great Educational Tool for All Skill Levels

I want to start with this is a fantastic book and should be in every developer's library.

I have made it through most of this book so far and even as a professional developer focused on big data, machine learning and cloud technologies have learned a fair amount from it. I think one of the most important aspects of this book is the progression from simple to sophisticated with a focus on the simplest solution that solves the problem. I sit on the board of a community college and am an adjunct professor as well as industry guest speaker at several Universities. I recommend this book primarily for an intermediate audience, however I will be using it in my introduction to programming classes as well, as I believe with some guidance, this book will spark far more programming discussion and thought than the simpler topics.

The book is complete with functioning code and downloadable data sets; a perfect educational tool.

An Original, Compelling History Everyone in American Should Read

The product description supplied by the publisher to Amazon does not begin to do justice to this marvelous new entry on the shockingly misunderstood war in Vietnam. Ride the Thunder is not a traditional single-volume history of the long and very complex combat-diplo-war in Southeast Asia. Instead, author Richard Botkin (a former United States Marine Corps infantry officer) carves off an important slice of the story, packing and filling around the edges to provide a contextual telling of the events in toto.

Botkin's tale centers on the little-told and virtually unknown story of a handful of American and Vietnamese Marines who fought against horrendous odds and arguably WON the war by stopping a brutal 1972 invasion by North Vietnam (known as the Easter Offensive). These same brave souls lived to watch diplomats and politicians insert the surrender rug beneath their feet, yank it out, and knock down the victorious edifice earned by the blood of tens of thousands of men and women (including 50,000+ young Americans).

Central to the plot are a few individuals and their daring exploits, chief among them Capt. John Ripley (whose jaw-dropping raid to blow up the Dong Ha bridge is told here better than anywhere else I have ever read); Maj. Le Ba Binh (a South Vietnamese Marine whose men fought off and beat back more than 20 times their number), and Lt. Col. Gerry Turley (whose strategic and tactical leadership and personal courage helped stave off what looked to be certain defeat, and then turn it into a victory). By the time you finish this book, you will know these men, their families (in most cases), and their hearts.

"Everything Americans know about the end of the Vietnam War is wrong," claimed the author in a publicly available interview. "From the American side, I think most people have a completely uninformed or misinformed opinion of the Vietnam War. Most Americans, including people who served in Vietnam, didn't appreciate the level of sacrifice of the South Vietnamese. These people love freedom." Indeed this is true. Very few in the West--even at this late date--appreciate what took place there, especially during the war's latter years. As Botkin documents, the Communists (NVA) routinely and intentionally used artillery fire to kill thousands of helpless civilians (including the young the old, and the sick). "They would even place high-value targets near civilian centers." If you pay attention to modern events, the similarity to tactics employed by Hamas, Hezbollah, and Al Qaeda will come to mind. Politicians, including Ted Kennedy, promised one thing and then cut off support, guaranteeing that millions of people in South Vietnam would endure a life of misery, near-slavery, and mass butchery. This backstabbing effort, developed inside Washington, D.C., also ensured that Pol Pot would have free rein to fertilize the killing fields of Cambodia with the blood of millions of his own citizens.

Why, then, were we in the America fed lies of the worse kind? "The communists were masters at using propaganda against us," Botkin explains. Freedom-seeking Vietnamese endured untold pain and suffering unimaginable to most Americans while Communists released propaganda lapped up by Western critics of the war. Communist = Good, American military = Bad. The obvious lies spun from salons in Hanoi (and even inside our own Capitol Building) fit the media-spun meme of the times. The parallel to what is transpiring now in Honduras is palpable. There was no military coup there, but the media insist otherwise, and average Americans are duped in the process. It is as disgusting today as it was in the 1960s-70s. And just as dangerous.

Ride the Thunder is fresh in every respect, well-written, and often thrilling. Most of it you have never read before. The final pages detailing the years of untold suffering endured by Maj. Le Ba Binh and his family are heart wrenching (and among the best in the book). I heartily recommend Botkin's book as an antidote to the monographs and storylines heretofore offered up as truth.

The Truth at Last!

I just finished reading this book and to be honest it brough tears to my eyes as I read about the heroism and sacrifice of the brave South Vietnamese and American Marines whose stories are told within its pages. As a Vietnam Vet and former US Marine, I found this book truly spellbinding and enlightening. Mr. Botkin is an exceptionally gifted writer who relates his story in a very compelling and entertaining way, filling every page with pathos, historical detail, action, and political insight. I personally know several of the participants in Mr. Botkin's book and he captures their personalities perfectly and in the most engaging way. Their acts of courage will inspire any reader who values the traits of a warrior. There is no need to resort to hyperbole when Mr. Botkin tells the story of several key participants in the defense of Quang Tri Province during the 1972 TET invasion by the North Vietnamese. Each of these participants, both Vietnamese and American, are larger than life heroes. Their stories are told in this book for the first time - and what stories they are! If you have an interest in the Vietnam War and would like to know the truth about how bravely our South Vietnamese allies fought and why they ultimately lost the war, this is a book you must have. I also highly recommend it for anyone with an interest in the human aspects of combat and the enduring triumph of the human condition despite overwhelming odds. In short, I consider this one of the very best books ever written about the Vietnam War.
