The Mexican Flu, a highly infectious strain of H1N1 Virus that first appeared a month earlier in Mexico City, Mexico in September of 2012 is ravaging the United States and the rest of the world.
The family escapes race riots, genocide, militia and military roadblocks and biker gang attacks, to Southwest Iowa to join the rest of the tough and colorful McMiller clan in a small town in Roughton Iowa.
Join Crisa and her family as they travel from Los Angeles, California to Roughton, Iowa, an odyssey that will test the family's courage, intellect and values. See a normal girl tossed into the chaos of human drama that was brought about by a devastating virus and some people's evil deeds.

I'm stealing Crisa's name for my first born. Lol

It's quite refreshing to find a book that shows off a multicultural family that embodies what America is today and trying to survive in a situation when everything seems impossible. It's nice to find a Filipino character in the book, even though it's not the leading role, but definitely made a mold to Crisa's character. The book is definitely centered around Crisa, but each character she's around with and encounters help create her personal growth in the story. This book is a pleasant read, making you look forward to the next chapter. Please hurry up and put the second installment. Thank you!

I noticed that me and the author have the same name and curiosity got the best of me

Surprisingly a gripping read. I noticed that me and the author have the same name and curiosity got the best of me. Characters are brilliant and the tension and stress of living amongst other survivors is really well written. Love that it's a simple read too, wonderfullly graphic, gory! Cannot wait to get started on Book 2!

I have always liked a book that does not think for me but which makes me think. This one did.

This book is an introduction to, as I understand, a quartet series but is already filled with action, mystery and controversy. Part 1 also showed several themes: chaos vs peace and order; love and sacrifice. The important characters for me are Crisa and her stepfather, Daniel Agridor. Their personalities will slowly shift towards the middle part of the book. The main idea here is survival. One quote that stood out for me which summarizes the idea is this, "The problem is the government looks at it in a context of the country while a person looks at it in a context of his family and home. To protect his family, he will say 'It's every man for himself'." The author was able to support his idea when the family experienced and witnessed fear and trauma, and the question that came to mind was "Which matters most, personal preservation and survival over compassion and selflessness? The answer was clear. Family comes first. The author should publish the second part soon as not to keep his readers hanging for long. I'm looking forward to the mysteries unfolding and expecting more twists. I would recommend this to young readers and to fans of fiction with military action, and political and economic issues. And those who are simply book lovers..
