It is hard to imagine how a serious collector of antique British Military firearms could bear to be without this invaluable publication. Ditto for those others with any interest in the history of this subject and period.
Blackmore manages to produce a narrative that is both engaging and informative.
There is plenty of background on the development of the British Military Ordnance system combined with full data on individual weapons , their evolution and how they may be identified.
The work is copiously illustrated with photographs of original weapons held by the Armouries of The Tower of London and includes appendices which identify barrel,lock and stock marks.
The late Mr Blackmore spent 10 years on his researches and his dedication has resulted in the production of a book which has become a standard and invaluable reference point.
Although now out of print, the work merits any inconvenience which the reader may have to suffer to obtain a second hand copy.

This is a true master piece!

A few weeks ago I attended Lean Kanban Nordic 2015 in Stockholm. Henrik Kniberg did a keynote presentation with the title ”The Art of Figuring Out What to Build”. It was all about focusing on building the right things, the ones that brings value to the customer. This shall be done in smaller increments to allow fast feedback to avoid the ”big bang”-approach that is the case with the Waterfall-method. As you will see, this resonates 100% with what is written in this book.

The book consist of 22 short chapters and they are divided into two parts:
- Part I - The Circle of Value
- Part II - Notes and Essays

The first part starts by stating ”As we do, your job is to think a lot, while I write very little”. A lot of thoughtful questions are raised throughout the book, time should be spent thinking of those! First out in the book is value, that is the point of our work, and stated to be ”what you want”. We should ship value in smaller pieces.

How should we bring value? One key component is to organize ourselves into small teams that deliver features, feature teams. Persons that share the same competence in the feature teams will form a guild or community of practice. Things go best with frequent releases of the software. We should not think or keep track of low-value ideas. Two levels are used to describe functionality; features -> stories. Stories is not recommended to be broken down into tasks, but rather smaller stories. As for planning use ”Yesterday’s Weather”. You will probably get as much done in this coming iteration, as you did in last. If you need to state how long things will take, just count things done and make a prediction.

Build your product, feature by feature. For this to work the product needs to be nearly free of defects after each iteration (two week period). In fact, the product needs to be nearly free of defects all the time! The features needs to be build upon a solid foundation or ”infrastructure”, that is developed at the same time as the features. We test at two levels, with ”Business” tests and ”Programmer” tests. All these tests needs to be automated. Refactoring is also essential.

Management shall state what to do, but leave out to the teams to on how to do it. Management shall also limit the number of products and programs to work on, since working on a lot of things in parallel just slows everything down.

In chapter 20, the final point is ”Most of all, think”. Building a product is complex, you should use inspect and adapt.

Recommendation

This is a true master piece! Since the chapters are so short and to the point, it’s almost like reading poetry. Agile poetry. This is the ”true north” or ”guiding star” in Agile we all should aim for! In 5 to 10 years from now, everything in this book will seem darn obvious and the whole software industry will be working this way. Hopefully. If everybody reads it.

About the Author
Dr. Christine Harrington is a professor in the History and Social Sciences department and serves as the director for the Center for the Enrichment of Learning and Teaching, a professional development center for faculty, at Middlesex County College in New Jersey. She is a licensed psychologist with a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Lehigh University, an M.A. in Counseling and Personnel Services, and a B.A. in Psychology from Trenton State College. She has been teaching the Student Success Course at the community college level for over 15 years, often teaching special sections for students with learning disabilities. In addition to teaching the Student Success course, Dr. Harrington's teaching experience includes Introduction to Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, Social Psychology, Educational Psychology, Child Psychology, and Lifespan Development, teaching many of these courses in an online format as well as the traditional in person format. Prior to teaching full time, she worked in the Counseling and Career Services Department for seven years, serving students with disabilities, as well as the general campus population. Dr. Harrington also served as the Assessment Coordinator for her campus, providing workshops, consultation and support to academic and service areas assessing courses, programs, and services. Dr. Harrington frequently presents at national conferences, colleges and universities on topics such as motivation, the syllabus, dynamic lecturing, and effective group work. Her research based approach to the student success course was featured in an article published in E-Source for College Transitions. Dr. Harrington was also invited to write a chapter on the developmental process of becoming a critical thinker for an upcoming book to be published by the National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience.

Warning, Mindtap Access Code not included for Kindle Version.

Rented the e-book version of this text book, and was disappointed to find that my professor requires the use of a Cengage learning media named Mindtap. Other students that have purchased the paperback have had this access code included with their purchase, however my e-book version for my kindle had no such resource. Keep this in mind while making your purchase and ask your professor if this access code will be needed while taking the course prior to making your decision. A $35 rental turned into well over $100, when I had to purchase the access code separately for $75.

indispensable for would-be med students/doctors

This is a very useful book for any high school student who is thinking of becoming a doctor or even for middle school students. It would also be helpful for young people already in medical school who want tips about how to successfully jump through all the hurdles and chose the right specialty. This book is like having about a dozen mentors who tell you everything they went through to get into some excellent medical schools and what they did to stay in and succeed, including right up to the point that they entered their professional practice. It has so much valuable and in some cases "inside" information such as how one school differs from another, how to best study for some of the main exams, how to prepare for a medical school and position yourself to get in. Perhaps most important, it explains to the reader what being a doctor--and a medical student--actually involved. Some young people will read this book and decide it is not for them. In which case they have saved tons of money and time. Those who decide it is for them will have gained some really valuable information that will help them in planning their futures.

Best Book on Borneo Beads

I picked up this book in Borneo and was amazed by its beauty, amount of information, and its incredibly low price for a book of this quality. I have been collecting beadwork from Borneo during 7 trips over the past 20 years and found this book very useful in evaluating and understanding my collection. Heidi Munan is the authority on Borneo beads having the credentials of living in Sarawak for 40 years and traveling throughout Borneo to visit with tribal people to view their beads and how they use them as daily ornamentals, family heirlooms, and for ceremonial events. She also describes where they came from, the significance of individual beads, and how they may be used in various crafts and appareil. She has also written several other books about Borneo and is the Honary Curator of Beads at the Sarawak Museum. If you are interested in Borneo, tribal art, or beads in general you must have this book.
