This is an old history of the Crusades and it was written in French. However, the translation is good and the text flows smoothly. This is a serious, academic work and not the best for a start on the Crusades, but readers with some knowledge of medieval Europe and Byzantium will enjoy it, especially with the thought that Michaud's history has been widely quoted in other works until it was superseded by more modern scholarship. Due to its age, the style is somewhat orotund and some of the views expressed are questionable, and hence the four stars. All the same and however many the stars, for serious scholars of the Crusades this is an essential work and the price made it a bargain.

At over 25k locations, this is a massive history of the Crusades from the West to the Holy Land and North Africa. Spain and the Baltic are touched upon, but they are not the main subject of this.
This was started over 200 years ago, so some of this might offend, but if you can ignore that it's a great read showing the turmoil in the Holy Land, as well as some of the changes back home. I never realized that the Teutonic Knights were active in Palestine - always figured they were on the Baltic, so learned something new.
I picked up while free, but a great buy regardless.

The best that I have read on the Crusades. It gives an authentic and at times a shocking view of the "Heroes" such a Richard the Lion Heart and religion in those centuries.
