“Theoretical Aerodynamics is a user-friendly text for a full course on theoretical aerodynamics. . . Presented in an easy-to-read style making full use of figures and illustrations to enhance understanding, and moves well simpler to more advanced topics.” (Expofairs.com, 20 June 2013)
"The main objective of the book is to cover the classical theory for inviscid flow using exact solutions of the linear equations or approximations to the equations with, for example, panel methods and thin aerofoil theory. This provides a good grounding for the student in the basic properties of the fluid flow and results can be achieved by simple calculation." (The Aeronautical Journal 2015)

An essential insight for Aerodynamics students/Professionals
By Ashish Vashishtha
Theoretical Aerodynamics is another great book for undergraduate and graduate students as well as for professionals, written by Prof. E. Rathakrishnan by using his vast experience in teaching and research. This book covers all the aspects of aerodynamics for an aerospace student/engineer from essential of fluid dynamics, aircraft flight to compressible aerodynamics and effect of different theoretical aspects on flight. It has a good blend of physical concepts, mathematical techniques and application oriented example and exercise problems to understand aerodynamics study of flights. The precise definition of different technical terms used for theoretical aerodynamics is highlight of the book. The real gems are chapters on transformations, vortex theory, airfoil theories and compressible flow effects. The compilation of vast field of aerodynamics is well written and remarkably presented in simple and logical manner to develop understanding of each aspect of theoretical aerodynamics with required exercise problems. This book is highly recommended for beginners in aerodynamics, students and engineers to have good insight on the topic.

Very rewarding book on theoretical aerodynamics !
By Client d'Amazon
Student at Ecole Centrale Lyon, I read this book.
The latter is very gratifying.
The several chapters are : basics, essence of fluid mechanics, conformal transformation, transformation of flow pattern, thin aerofoil theory, panel method, finite aerofoil theory, compressible flows and simple flights.
At each end of chapter, there is a summary and many exercise problems with solutions.
Even if the principles are not simple, they are very well explained.
I strongly recommend this book to students who aim at strengthening their knowledges in these different topics, to engineers and finally to teachers who can use this book in their lectures.
Furthermore, the book is very clear, with a nice organisation/presentation.

A mixed review
By J.Y. Xing
I have a mixed opinion about this text. The book is not bad, but most of the content is already available in other books such as Fundamental of Aerodynamics. Parts of this text are very interesting other are disappointing. For example, the chapter about the Zhukovsky (Joukovsky) transform is pretty good and more detailed than other modern texts. However, this theory is probably only useful for historical purpose since this method is not used anymore for the calculation of lift.
On the other hand, this text looks more like a review book more than a true textbook. Although the author seems to assume that the reader don't have much background on aeronautics and aerodynamics, I don't think that a newbie will be able to follow the text. That is particularly true for the two first chapters (Chapter 1: Basics and Chapter 2: Essence of Fluid Mechanics). The information is just threw away and some part looks more like a collection of lecture notes more than a well integrated text. Thus, I seriously think that some parts need more details and editing. Also, I had the impression that the author did not where to begin and where to end. So I don't think that the organization of the text is well optimized for pedagogical purposes.
An other point, the final chapter about flight dynamics is very disappointing. The author try to explain some important concepts of flight dynamics in only 20 pages. It looks more like a last minute addition to show some applications of aerodynamics on an actual aircraft but I think that this addition is not necessary and very lacking.
Finally, the number of references listed in this text is minimal. I don't think that this book can be considered as a graduate level text book. It can be considered for a second class on fluid mechanics/aerodynamics at undergraduate level. Most of the time, the mathematics used is relatively simple, not comparable to more advanced text such as Incompressible Flow [R. Panton] or Fundamental of Fluid Mechanics [I.G. Currie]. This book is very general, there are specialized books about viscous flow (look for Frank White or H. Schlichting) and compressible flow (look for J.D. Anderson or M. Zucrow or J.E.A. John).
